Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Why do people assume that because the seat maps show available seats in F today that these seats would not be sold at some point before the flight? Some of these flights that were booked at this price are months away. Even those that are in February still have plenty of time to be filled (or not filled because customers of this error fare took up all the space).

There was a mistake fare a couple of years ago, ZRH-HKG in J for 88 euro; it got ticketed but CX blamed the OTA and canceled everything.

Someone already mentioned this above, and I answered them. There’s a difference between $2,000 (roughly what they get for an award) and 89£ where they are clearly losing money.

There was another F fare probably 11-12 years ago, HKG-JFK, I believe, for $3500 or so that was cancelled a day or two after the fare was available. That may be a more comparable situation cost wise although was so long ago policies may have changed.

Ahhhh....the emotional phases of a legitimate* mistake fare.
1. Discovery - mistake fare is posted on FT. Novices frantically check how much vacation time they have and if the dates of availability mesh with their schedules. Experienced FTers just check their TripIt to line things up with existing trips and hotel mistakes they have already booked and then book it and worry about contacting spouses or their boss later. Word spreads like wildfire. Bloggers blog; trolls gnash their teeth.
2. Excitement - Tickets purchased, confirmation emails received and dates of travel shared with other FTers. Many feel so lucky they contemplate buying Powerball tickets. Discussions of what to see and do and where to stay crop up in other threads. The Timbuktu destination forum sees a sudden burst of activity. The Travel Photography forum gets three new threads entitled something like "Which camra is best 4 Timbuktu???????" Seasoned FTers sit back and enjoy reading the discussion threads.
3. Stress Stage 1 - Concern over e-ticket delivery causes novices to frantically check their email inbox every few seconds, constantly monitoring their iPhones for a Gmail notification. Seasoned FT veterans sit back and relax, having already PDFed the eticket receipt from the website. They stated multiple times that you didn't have to fly in order to get the 9k avios, so they definitely knew what they were doing. Flying empty planes is bad if you cant sell seats, but it's not bad if you can sell the seats and still fly an empty plane resulting in less fuel burn.

My conspiracy theory right now is that the bookings will hold, but they will treat them as redemption awards (there are already hints at this upthread). Therefore no lucrative AS miles for any of these bookings. They will then look at reducing/eliminating award bookings for partners for 2019 to compensate for this little episode.
As you say shd9 only CX has the numbers so, as I say, only a conspiracy theory. Perhaps for CX it is just simpler to cancel the bookings based on the fact that this is clearly an error fare.

Assuming CX can buy miles on partner FF programs, the cost for those miles will put a huge dent into what it gets from this fare. My BA Avios calculation for DAD-HKG-JFK return in F as a BA Gold is about 25K or $250 out of the $825 paid ($450 base fare). The AS bite would be even more. Shall wait and see how CX handles this but I’d likely fly even without FF miles as Vietnam Nam was on my agenda for this year. (Positioning will be a hassle though would be nice if that QR MXP-DOH-BKK J fare comes back to combine....enough BA tier points to be just 500 TPS short of Gold for another two years.)
People keep talking about how CX is going to treat this as a mileage ticket. I don’t know how they would do that considering we actually paid for the flights, and they are in fare buckets. This doesn’t seem like a very likely scenario to me that CX would do. They’re either going to honour our fare or not. Not to mention I’m not sure that whole mileage ticket thing would be fair. Also when has an airline ever done that on a mistake fare?

I saw someone that booked NINE round trips to Boston. They should police some people and limit them to two or three. I only have one, but NINE bookings is pure lunacy. Three is even too much.

Ahhhh....the emotional phases of a legitimate* mistake fare.
1. Discovery - mistake fare is posted on FT. Novices frantically check how much vacation time they have and if the dates of availability mesh with their schedules. Experienced FTers just check their TripIt to line things up with existing trips and hotel mistakes they have already booked and then book it and worry about contacting spouses or their boss later. Word spreads like wildfire. Bloggers blog; trolls gnash their teeth.
2. Excitement - Tickets purchased, confirmation emails received and dates of travel shared with other FTers. Many feel so lucky they contemplate buying Powerball tickets. Discussions of what to see and do and where to stay crop up in other threads. The Timbuktu destination forum sees a sudden burst of activity. The Travel Photography forum gets three new threads entitled something like "Which camra is best 4 Timbuktu???????" Seasoned FTers sit back and enjoy reading the discussion threads.
