Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Yeah, should have been clearer. That works. Clearing immigration is the key part. For my turnaround, I’d rather go into the city than walk around, check in, and wait in the airport for 7-8 hours.

What I wonder if whether this was a fare that was supposed to be published in a test environment first and accidentally was pushed to production - if you look at the historical routing rules on EF, it shows the fare as $19,900 even though the A fare was only $1,114 at time of ticketing. How someone fat fingers 1,114 instead of 19,990 is beyond me and there's no currency conversion calculation between USD/HKD/VND that would lead me to believe someone moved a decimal if the fare was filed in HKD or VND instead of USD.

Would someone be kind enough to post the fare basis for AAAROVN8? I see the one for SHARRVN8 above with 2 clauses, one saying max stay is 3 months, the other says 12 months. I had tried to book the inbound 6 months after the outbound and CX.com kept erroring out saying nothing could be found. Ended up booking a one-way for the price of RT.

What I wonder if whether this was a fare that was supposed to be published in a test environment first and accidentally was pushed to production - if you look at the historical routing rules on EF, it shows the fare as $19,900 even though the A fare was only $1,114 at time of ticketing. How someone fat fingers 1,114 instead of 19,990 is beyond me and there's no currency conversion calculation between USD/HKD/VND that would lead me to believe someone moved a decimal if the fare was filed in HKD or VND instead of USD.

At least we can hope it's a mistake. Worst case scenario for CX is that an employee sabotaged their systems (in which case we would likely never hear about it).
For what it's worth, their stock price remained flat during the trading day of Jan 2, with no reaction after the delightful tweet.

Can we throw out some good ideas for positioning flights? I need something for early/mid June and award space out of LAX seems to be empty to everywhere in Asia. Tons in May and July but not June, just my luck.
There's a pretty good PE fare from LAX to HKG that's even valid for one way on AA. Any other options I can look at?

That's what mine looks like. It's difficult to fat finger a 4 where 199 would go. Maybe intended for economy or premium economy, and they selected the wrong fare to update?
