I assume no Great Chinese Firewall at least?

I didn’t notice anything most of the time, but it didn’t work most of the time over China. Not sure if that’s a regulation or something.

finally finished my TR! you can find it on my blog here.

PVG-CKG-LAX-YVR-LAX-HKG-PVG

couple things:
1. I do not earn any money from the blog, as it is a personal space for me to document my travels, so I do not push cards or anything. It may contain personal feelings, graphic images, and profanity. Viewer caution is advised.
2. The journal has 2 distinct parts, if you are only interested in the HX flights go to the latter half
3. first half talks about my experience in CKG on my way to LAX positioning for the flight.

In general, if you only want the short version, here it is:
Lounge in LA is meh, not a lot of food or seats, so nothing worth checking out for.
Departed 1hr late due to mechanical, and went south which was really rare for me.
Service is not bad, but nothing over-the-top. The food is pretty good, definitely comparable to CX. drinks are very good and authentic, recommended.
seat is excellent given you get a true window seat, not only more privacy but also more space too!
Internet is slow and sporadic, it also has issues with pricing for me. I do not recommend purchasing any amount.
Lounge in HKG is pretty good, comparable to CX, the noodle bar even makes good egg waffles, highly recommend.
HKG-PVG on old A330 staggered seat, it is old but not worn, food is inedible, and service was machine-like, but understandable for last leg short hop.
All in all 4/5, would take again without hesitation, and definitely not a clear winner or loser in front of CX, its main competitor.

Thanks for sharing & the link - you mentioned in your post that you found that there is a way to pre-reserve your meal for HX - do you happen to have a link you found for that or instructions?

How do you tell if you are in the new aircraft? I am in a "A359"

I had the following success in getting seats by chat - I asked for the window.

LAXHKG 069 06NOV 17C
HKGBKK 761 07NOV 16A
BKKHKG 762 11NOV 16A
HKGLAX 068 11NOV 16A

Your seats have already been reserved. Kindly remind you as the seats are preselected, so there might be chances that your seats will be changed.Your seating arrangements should be subject to the seat number as shown in your boarding pass.
for your flight 069 window seats not available

the new aircraft is branded as 35A, old one is 359.
For the meal reservation, it states that it only works for any flight departing from HKG, so I imagine you can call in as well for that. On the website it keeps suggesting to call the reservation service hotline so that might just work.

Was not planning on it. I did not take many pictures.

We did spend 5 days in Koh Samui at 2 unbelievable properties. The Conrad and Ritz.

The menus departing Hong Kong have been around since 2017 according to the print. How often do they change things up? Seems like it would get really boring quickly.

Has anyone's flight so far been on the new configuration? (35A?) So far it sounds like everyone has had the older layout. I think they said the new product would roll out in September.

I am flying LAX-HKG-SGN later this week. The aircraft from HKG-SGN was downgraded to economy only. I asked on live chat for seat assignments, asking for extra legroom, and was told that I would need to pay extra if I wanted those seats. When I noted that I was a displaced business class passenger, the chat agent said it didn't matter and I would have to pay. She allocated me seats in the second to last row of the aircraft and then just left the chat without saying goodbye! Sigh! I tried calling the US call center yesterday and was on hold for well over an hour waiting for an agent and gave up!

As the onward journey is now in Y, will I be able to use the lounge in HKG?

Under Plan & Book --> Trip Management--> Value Added... This is what I found for reserving your meal(s),
"Exclusively for Business Class customers on all flights departing from Hong Kong, you can pre-select the main course between 30 days and 48 hours prior to departure at no extra cost. "

I'm also flying LAX-HKG-SGN this Saturday and I reconfirmed twice with the call center and online chat that my flight was not downgraded.

Something Fishy going on.

I have a flight in 2 days.
i check in, take 17C, that is the best i can do.
Checkin complete, seat confirmed.
Screen shot taken

15 mins later expedia sends me an email with my itenary all in ECONOMY class. I am furious, i call them.

I tell the agent that i have screen shots of everything i have done including my original reservation in J class business.

Then manager comes on, expedia, and tries to tell me that it is showing J class but it is being classified as economy. He says the company should honor it if i have a screen show of the CMO of HKG airline tweeting that they will honor.

I chat and call HKG airline and they send me a pdf file with my itenary in J class.

Apparently, my seat 17C did not go through. And they cannot help on the phone/chat.

Self serve tells me to check in at airport.

I will update.

17C selected and confirmed.

You should be fine - I checked in at the counter and it printed economy pass on the small stub but business on the big stub. HKA seems to be aware of this issue and 17 is def in business class.
