So I've had some luck pricing it at under 1100GBP an hour ago but the lowest I see now is 1700. Am I unlucky or has it been pulled?

Wow. That was gone really quickly. I doubt it's a coincidence. I really thought this fare would be around for a while. Ah well.

Edit: And they added an MPM to boot! The rate desk definitely read this thread.

Great, when I finally got help and found an itinerary that works around my schedule, they pull the fare !! Oh well, the saying goes... you snooze you lose!

Not sure I get this point about the MPM. These were always mileage fares, and the CAI - BUE mileage (9,910) is the same as it was before.

btw, If you are an Expert Flyer user you can check the historical fare rules, routing rules, and booking classes by running a Fare Information query with a historical date input in the Ticketing Date field. There you can see that the J1NFFMN5 fares were initially created on Feb. 16, 2017, effective Feb. 17, 2017. For those who purchase such tickets, it's probably always a good idea to save down the fare rules in effect when purchased, but in any case they remain available on Expert Flyer if/when needed.

I don't recall seeing an MPM on this fare when I read the rules on ITA. I didn't look it up on EF, though, so maybe I just missed it (and it was there all along).

All fares are either route based or MPM. MPM is standard for all carriers and can be looked up for a city pair on Expertflyer. The fare may have reductions for traveling through specific airports or the fare may say that MPM doesn't apply for transfers (e.g. The famous AZ fares out of BKK).

This fare was MPM prior to refiling, just as it is now.

Just to add to what Skunker says above, if a fare is an MPM fare but doesnt specify MPM at all then it will not be bookable. I was just messing with some dirt cheap fares today that have no MPM specified (but are MPM fares) and several TAs have tried and failed to get them ticketed.

Fare was around a long time. I knew as soon as I show this thread the FT crowd would get it pulled.

Probably longer than you know. I booked a similar version as a fully flexible D fare back in 2013.

There is the trick it thread, but that wont teach you much. The underlying issue with YQ is that it appears to be calculated by a separate system than the one that calculates the overall fare itself and it is susceptible to some inputs that confuse it and render unintended results (unintended for the airlines). What I understand from looking at this from the outside (more or less just black box reverse engineering through brute force submission of various combinations of flights) and getting insight from folks who have done even more analysis, is that if you construct a set of flights in a certain way, the YQ engine gets confused. At the risk of oversimplifying, the YQ engine has a lookup table that the airlines populate, so AA files a record that says if you fly CAI-EZE on one of its J fares you should get charged $800 YQ. But if you stick another segment in front of or at the end of CAI-EZE, maybe it confuses the YQ engine, because say an AA fare from Australia-Argentina or Egypt to Australia has lesser or no YQ record filed in the table?

Can only be done where a fare allows end on end ticketing, which today is rare(r) outside of unrestricted or old forgotten fares.

Unbelievably primitive IT systems strike again, I guess this one can be to the benefit of the traveler though ;-)

btw, AA usually files a number of fares in these "families" and they did so here. CAI-MEX in F is still there, both as ow or rt, but it is probably too rich for many folks.
