*Update 28/10/2015*
American Airlines has sent out a batch of emails offering customers two options. None of which earns miles and does not address DOT's old guidelines.

We have yet to here from DOT.

Here is a copy of the letter:

Thank you for your patience in our responding to your complaint regarding the cancellation of a reservation for travel to China which you placed on hold earlier this year.

The reservation you placed on hold was for an extremely low fare offered by American in error, and the mistaken fare was offered for only a few hours. Because the fare was offered in error, we cancelled those reservations, such as yours, that had been made but not ticketed.

In our view, given the fact that the fares American offered for China travel in those few hours were so low that it was obvious they were offered in error (a fact widely acknowledged in the social media posts which prompted many of those who reserved the fares to do so), we were justified in cancelling those reservations that were made but not ticketed, and accordingly will not honor the fare associated with your cancelled reservation. However, we will offer to you two options for reduced rate travel to China, one for business class and one for coach class. The two options are as follows:

Option A – Business Class: We offer you a $1,500 discount on any roundtrip business cabin fare to Shanghai or Beijing.
  • Reservation must be booked by AA and operated entirely by AA (including AA’s regional partners).
  • Travel may not be upgraded, by upgrade certificate, AAdvantage status, or any other means, to a higher class of service.
  • Travel will not be eligible to earn AAdvantage miles or Elite Qualifying Miles or points, and will not count as Elite Qualifying segments in the AAdvantage program.
  • Travel may be ticketed immediately and must be completed within one year of the date of this letter.
  • Travel to PEK or PVG should originate and end in the same U.S. airport(s) as in the original PNR with the same passenger(s) (or subset of passengers) traveling as were listed in the cancelled PNR.
  • Must be ticketed within six weeks of the date of this letter.

Option B – Main Cabin: We offer you the opportunity to receive a $0 fare basis main cabin fare to Shanghai or Beijing, subject to taxes and fees of approximately $450 (varies slightly by routing)..
  • Reservation must be booked by AA for any Q or O class fare to PEK or PVG, and operated entirely by AA (including AA’s regional partners).
  • This offer is subject to Q or O class inventory availability for travel outbound starting November 15, 2015.
  • Travel must be completed within one year of the date of this letter.
  • Travel to PEK or PVG should originate and end in the same U.S. airport(s) as in the original PNR with the same passenger(s) (or subset of passengers) traveling as were listed in the cancelled PNR.
  • Must be ticketed within six weeks of the date of this letter.

If you would like to accept one of these offers, please contact American Airlines at the following number to make your flight reservation.

Any more data points on whether people are getting 2 EQPs (or not, as per AAs poorly worded threat) would be greatly appreciated!

Just read through a ton of the thread and was really surprised that more people didn't book: DCA-DFW-HKG-PEK-HKG-DFW-DCA

It was only double the cost but you get the new bird.

There are currently other inexpensive options to fly the 787 like ORD to PEK via DFW for many dates in October and November for $610 (I saw this on the mileage run thread).

With the routes mentioned in the post you quote (DFW-HKG-DFW), I think they were referring to the 77W as the new bird, not the 787.

Flew into PEK a few hours ago... I didn't expect PEK or the roads to be busy around 8:30PM... boy oh boy was I wrong. I had to wait 40 minutes for the taxi queue then another 30 minutes to find a driver that wouldn't charge me a fixed fare and knew where I was going. I have a few more runs on this route, I might just pay for a o/w airport transfer so I don't have to deal with this again. Absolutely ridiculous.

I got tired of that real quick. Uber / Lyft in China. Every time. ^

It may not be the cheapest option, but it's consistent, and you can input your location in the app so it's crystal clear every time.

Regarding taxi's, I've always used this app in Beijing to get around. Translates the names into Chinese so you can show the driver.

And requires overnighting at DCA and then leaving at the crack of dawn. Yuck.

Why not just take the Airport Express into town?

I just returned from my "3" day trip to Beijing. I was "originally" scheduled to fly out on April 13tha and return on the 16th. So I would have had about 36 hours in Beijing.

Well, my flight out on the 13th was delayed, and at about 2 hours into delay I began to panic that I would actually have no time in Beijing, so I called reservations. After explaining my situation and asking to change my return to the 17th and a long wait while the reservation agent "researched", I was told that I could change but I would have to pay the difference in the fares, about $9,000.00. Needless to say , I said I would just stay where I was.

The flight was further delayed and we finally were allowed to board around 7:30 or 8 pm. We sat on the plane for about an hour when the pilot stated that the mechanical issues could not be resolved and our flight was postponed until 10 am on the 14th. I called the preferred line this time, and explained situation and this time flight was changed to 17th and they also changed my "positioning" flight which was made on USAir ways so agent had to "confer" with them, but it was all flights changed without charge. We were given food vouchers totaling $31 (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a hotel room and some were getting taxi vouchers if no hotel shuttle.

Plane left "on time" the next morning (well, a little delay concerning wind and runway). Everything else smooth.

When I arrived at my hotel, checked my email and American had emailed me about the delay and an apology and note saying they were giving me 15,000 miles for my "trouble". I checked my AA account, and they had already deposited.

On an additional note, I had signed up for platinum challenge the day before I left to start my journey (had been silver on US, then gold on AA) and that had already changed as well, I am now a AA platinum. The miles from flight already posted and the DOUBLE EQP did also!

Wow that's frustrating! All's well that ends well. Why does this flight keep getting delayed?

Today's flight 187 was delayed as well (currently showing estimated departure at 7 PM CST)

2.0 earned.

Sadly, I need 2 more segments to meet 4 min to qualify for AA Gold. IAD-DFW-PVG were all AA127.. rookie mistake, but hey.. wasn't really flying this for the miles.
Hello, a rookie here with a very rookie question. I have a flight coming up in May. How do you get 2.0 EQP? Do we need to put a request? thanks in advance.

If it is the first time in Beijing, I would avoid the airport express and the subway at rush hour. Dongzhimen station where the airport express ends is very crowded. If you have any bags, you might not be able to get on the subway.
