Using LAX MRs for ORD based

I want to book some MRs ex-LAX but I am positioned at ORD. Revenue fare to ORD is kindda expensive (~$400) and non-stop awards are not showing in the inventory.

Just really frustrated with lots of good opportunity ex-LAX but can't use them. ORD-LAX fares are rarely economically sound. Any tips to share here?

PS - I would use avios as well but not much of a difference b/w those and AA on ORD-LAX distance.

HAve you though of looking from MKE? Might find cheaper fares, or award availability, just a thought.

If you're positioning (and not checking bags), also look at hidden city. For a DEN-ORD positioning flight, I booked DEN-ORD-MKE that booked into G (united) instead of direct or award flights that weren't readily available.
