As indicated in the thread title, this deal is now dead.

How do I manage my itinerary/check my booking/select seats?

Note that the displayed receipt will be incorrect ($5 higher than actual) owing to a programming error. The taxes/fees shown includes the original $5 WF booking fee. Do not worry about this; it does not change the amount you are actually billed.
How many miles will I earn on United from my flight?
Here's the UA master page listing airline partners. If you click on a partner logo, you'll see a page containing a chart showing the yield for flights taken on partner metal. (It even says explicitly that it's the metal that counts: "The award miles accrued on codeshare flights are based on the operating carrier and their equivalent fare class.")

MileagePlus (UA) earning charts for
Will I do better if I credit to another *A carrier instead?
Maybe.

Miles&More (LH, LX,...) earning charts for
  • United Airlines (UA) (K, L, T fares earn 50%, 25% for flights in 2014)
  • Lufthansa (LH) (K, L, T fares earn 50% for TATL flights in 2013, 25% for TATL flights in 2014)
  • Swiss (LX) (K, L, T fares earn 50% for TATL flights in 2013, 25% for TATL flights in 2014)
  • Air Canada (AC) (K, L, T fares earn 50% for TATL flights in 2013, 25% for TATL flights in 2014)

Here's the master list of partner earning charts for Aegean (A3) and here's the list for Turkish Airlines (TK).
Are there other FlyerTalk members flying when I am?
Quite possibly! There is a meetup thread on the CommunityBuzz forum. Post if you would like to participate.

The link isn't working. I put in NYC (but it is LGA so you can use that) and MXP and March 20 outbound, return 3/25. It priced at $512/2. If you View Alternate Dates I'm sure there are more.

You won't find it after purchase, at least not from UA. Best suggestion I can offer is to use ITA to recreate your itinerary and fare class and read them there.

So when will we know for sure that we are good to go? Got a pair of tickets to SYD for next August, and want to book some domestic flights.

Here's your answer:

Provide this information to a travel agent to help them match the fares found.
Make sure to provide the exact booking and fare codes shown.
Fare 1: Carrier UA KLXRC7NS NYC to DXB (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code K
Covers JFK-IAD (Economy), IAD-DXB (Economy)
$90.00
Fare 2: Carrier UA KLXRC7NS DXB to NYC (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code K
Covers DXB-IAD (Economy), IAD-LGA (Economy)
$90.00
United Arab Emirates International Advanced Passenger Information (API) Fee (ZR) $1.40
UA YQ surcharge (YQ) $634.00
US International Departure Tax (US) $17.20
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) $7.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) $13.50
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) $5.00
US Immigration Fee (XY) $7.00
US Customs Fee (YC) $5.50
United Arab Emirates Passenger Service Charge (AE) $20.40
United Arab Emirates Security and Safety Fee (TP) $1.40
US International Arrival Tax (US) $17.20

Subtotal per passenger $910.10
Number of passengers x1

TOTAL AIRFARE & TAXES $910.10
This ticket is non-refundable.
Changes to this ticket will incur a penalty fee.

As you can see, base fare is only $180 plus taxes and fees while YQ is $634. Back out YQ, and you have yourself quite a deal!

Hehehe I thought so. I checked some of those yesterday on ITA (I don't want to fly UA in coach almost no matter how cheap and didn't want to further add to the wideroe traffic load if I didn't have to) and there were some juicy YQs out there. None quite good enough to make me want to jump though.

^ Completely true.

Credit card companies - some seemed to be processing more quickly/with fewer problems than others.

Carrier - some outright cancellations with a message about a particular carrier not being covered. The two tickets that went through for me are UA metal; the outstanding one is a mix of UA and TK.

Early on, it seemed to me that perhaps some destinations were getting processed more quickly than others, which made no sense. Now I'm wondering if it was actually the carriers involved.

Of the two res that got ticketed three hours ago, I've only received one email.
Thanks, chollie! My variables were:

1) Card was Chase - I haven't gotten any notification, and I am all over the map with my cards that I've not gotten a decline from them in over 5 years.

2) Carrier was LH (UA codeshare) on the outbound EWR-FRA-BCN. UA marketed and operated flight on the return BCN-EWR.

3) R/t between EWR and BCN around Presidents' Day weekend, but you said city pairs don't seem to be the factors.

Exactly, we've even seen $0.50 fares on transatlantics this year (IB/TK)

If airlines want to play the fuel surcharge scam, they get burned sometimes.

No sympathy.

Fortunately, you have plenty of time. Even in the unlikely (but possible) event that there's pushback about these tickets, you can afford to relax for at least a week.

Any tips on the Air Canada and Swiss schemes?
Would love to end up in Northern America from Northern Europe, but can't really find anything cheaper than usual.
