MR Advice for POS (Port of Spain)

Hi All, I'm planning what's sort of a mileage run through POS (Port of Spain in Trinidad). I searched and didn't find any examples of doing the overnight turn. I'd like to know if anyone has any advice on the airport or what to do for a few hours. It's a bit silly, but my plan is
Day 1: Take UA 1457 IAH-POS arriving at 8:35 PM
Day 2: Take UA 1506 POS-EWR Departing at 1:25 AM
[So just under 5 hours between flights]

Do any of you have any experience with what immigration is like here? Can I just stay airside? Am I likely to be hassled? It appears they airport is a bit far out of town and taxis are expensive.

Just to be clear the rational for doing a 6.5 cpm mileage run is that I'm based at YYZ now, and mileage runs before the end of the year are few and far between. This is also just to requal for Plat....I might just say gold is good enough.

I went through POS on the way to Tobago a few years back, arriving on the same flight you are. I don't recall there being a transfer desk, but then I wasn't looking for one either. Entering POS was not too painful. The immigration officer asked where we were going, why were there and how long we would be in the country.

You have to pay a departure tax to leave the country as well. Google says it was about $16 at the time I went, but is now roughly $32 (TT$200). There was not much in the way of shops or food airside, at the time, either.

The airport is way out of town and you are right, I the taxi to the hotel for the night was expensive.

Hope I helped a little.

I transferred in POS on my way to CCS a few years ago. My recollections is that all passengers were whisked through Immigration without the option to remain airside. My connecting flight left early the next morning, but I was still allowed to go airside right after clearing Immigration and Customs. The exit official did not collect the departure tax; presumably, as I was in transit for a third country.

MUST do Inmigration and Customs!

1* MUST do Inmigration and Customs!
NO air-side stay!
2* Holiday Inn Express "Trincity" with free shuttle just 3 minutes away from airport.
BUT you better had dinner as every-thing else is closed, including the near-by mall.
3* Taxi to down-town, 20/30 minutes depending on traffic. Only one high-way.
BUT during the morning rush hour can be double that!
4* Hotel in Port of Spain, Courtyard by Marriot, across from shoppping center with "Texas de Brasil" (and other options) and a "casino"
Also the Hyatt and old-Crowne-Plaza, now a Radisson. All water-front.
5* MR's from BUF:
US -PHL>SEA=$295.00 - 5756 Miles - 5.13 cpm
UA -EWR>SFO=$340.00 - 6130 Miles - 5.55 cpm
About same miles as POS, try PTY, far better options, including free-shuttle to malls for shopping and excellent dinning.
Arrive 9:25 PM, over-night at Marriot Metromall return next day 10:05 AM.

6* NO more Airport Tax, it is included in your ticket and paid for.
