Creative routing, eg flying via MIA&DTW, is the easiest way to earn more miles without paying much more. You might want to use ITA, matrix.itasoftware.com, to figure out your alternativities.

I keep reading about this, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get ITA to do this for me. Is there a thread on this?

For one-way travel between Caracas and JFK, UA offers 2473 miles if you travel via Bogota, but 3678 if you travel via Houston and IAD.

I am not familiar with ITA, but if you search for flights on the UA website the schedule that appears on the screen indicates the mileage awarded for each of the possible routings. This only shows the flights of UA and its partners, but it will give you at least an approximate sense of what mileage to expect.

The ITA route language lets you specify a hub you want to fly through.
You can also use KAYAK, I believe that they let you select a hub with a checkbox.
