But $173+ was already coming up consistently for days now from DCA-SFO...

The US Airways flights, at least WAS-SFO, are no longer available for under $300.
In fact, East Coast-West Coast fares on US now appear to be reaching higher levels as a result of service cutbacks.
I love US' East Coast network, but their West Coast service, never stellar, now appears moribund.
