LAX to Bay Area on UA with stops

I need 3,400 UA miles. Rather than flying one flight long flight, I was hoping to depart LAX to either SFO or OAK and make a few stops to take advantage of the minimum accrual of 500 miles per flight segment. I am willing to make two trips to the Bay Area to achive my mileage goal, but I cannot seem to cost-effectively get there when i make a stop. Any ideas?

Can't be done on UA, sorry.

Why not just book a relatively inexpensive overnight midcon (e.g. ORD) or transcon (e.g. PVD)?

You could always route through Santa Barbara but it will probably cost as SBA is a small market. 2 RT's will net you 4,000 miles. If you plan ahead far enough the price does come down a little. I have seen it be almost the same price as the non-stop LAX-SFO or LAX-SJC when adding SBA as a connection but not very often.

Can't be done, as others advise, cheaply. Can often be done cheaply as follows:

SNA/ONT/CLD-LAX-SBA-SJC
or
SNA/ONT/CLD-LAX-SBA-SFO-SMF

Which is cheapest -- SNA/ONT/CLD -- changes often.

cblaisd, thanks for the routing idea. I found a good deal into SFO:

SNA-LAX-SBA-SFO and back.

Priced out at $152 total. 3000 miles for $152...not bad?

I know they're trying to avoid one long flight, but there have been flights to ORD for less than 200. It will net you 3490 status miles with LAX-ORD-LAX routing.

You're welcome.

But I thought you needed 3490 miles, not 3000 miles?

If you don't mind not being in the Bay Area, you could do a 7 segment trip for 3500 miles, viz.:

SNA-LAX-SBA-SFO-SMF and return SMF-SFO-LAX-SNA.

I *think* you could still do this in one day if that's a consideration.

Thanks for all the tips.

I think I am going to go with the SNA-SFO itinerary. I do need 3400 miles, but I will do two trips. I am not against doing one long trip, however I would prefer to spend the night in the Bay Area rather than a on red-eye or in ORD, PVD, MCO, etc.

I am paying 5¢/mile ($152/3000 miles). That sounds pretty good to me or am I way off?

It's OK. The best mileage runs tend to be around 3 cents per status mile, but they do require you to travel further from home. I'm paying 2.6 cents per status mile for the following $209 RT in January: OAK-LAX-JFK-IAD-RDU/RDU-IAD-MIA-DEN-OAK. Could be done on a weekend with an overnight in RDU; no redeye needed. However, I'm spending a couple of days in NC, and routing via MIA on the return to check out the RCC there, the only one in North America with an open bar.

ok, folks. thanks to some great suggestions from this board I was able to complete my last run successfully.

As I mentioned earlier, I was planning to do two runs. I am now considering what to do on my second run. I only need 400 miles. What is the cheapest (and quickest) possible mileage run I can do from LAX on a Saturday or Sunday? Any thoughts?

You can get a TO14A1N1 fare LAX-LAS-LAX for $95 (14 day advance purchase, overnite stay) that will give you 2 segments, 1000 miles. Leave LAX 22:15 and be back in LAX at 7:26 the next morning.
