Thanks for all your contributions!

Am I right in thinking that a transit visa is required?
I see the Hanoi flight has a pretty long layover which would allow you to see a few sights. I don't know how difficult the visa process would be? I presume you need an invitation?

Thanks!

Edit: I see visa free airside transit has resumed!
Would still require a visa to leave the airport.

At CAN passengers from many countries can transit without visa and be in China for up to 144 hours. Others can get a 24 hour stay permit.

You mention Hanoi. In Vietnam from many countries you can transit without visa as long as you don't leave the airport and don't have a connection longer than 24 hrs.

China Southern is still a Delta partner - https://www.delta.com/us/en/skymiles...rline-partners

And a Flying Blue partner - https://www.flyingblue.us/en/earn-sp...thern-airlines

All the flights I linked to are marketed and operated by China Southern, so they should be eligible for mileage earning.

Looks like space in the E fare code is gone on the outbound. The outbound flights are now booking into Q which is much more expensive.

Correct. I have a portion of the fare rules in the first post. Minimum stay is six days or the first Sunday after arrival.
