If you're looking for a warmer destination, you can get to Dubai via AMS on KLM for roughly $600 east coast/$700 west coast.

The folks at Dansdeals are finding good ex-NYC fares to TLV from about $600 (probably a little more to route back to NYC). Again, not a great impulse purchase, but if you need/want to go, you're probably not getting there for less.

Just priced up Sun 2-19-12 JFK-LHR / Sun 2-26-12 AMS-YUL $303.00 AI. Was thinking of taking the family to Europe over winter break. The plan was totally vetoed by the boss - Mrs. Number21. Too cold to go that time of year.

Just booked SFO-AMS-DUB/DUB-AMS-YYZ for ~$530 a/i, with an overnight "layover" in AMS on the way back.

Thanks for the tip!

If you "oversleep" or just miss the last leg, don't the miles not get credited to your account for the whole trip?

Generally you just lose the last leg, everything else will post.

I say generally because it is possible the airline could cause the entire trip not to post. However, unless you are flying throw-away tickets every week its unlikely to happen. So while there is no guarantee it will post, I'd say its 99.9% likely that it will.

You'll find most people in the MR forum won't speak in certainties; because of the type of fares and trips we are dealing in there is always the chance that something doesn't go as planned. The last thing we want is for someone to get into a complex ticket without realizing the possible problems, or to come back from a trip thinking they will definitely make UA 1K/whatever ST has and not get it.

A few data points in case anyone finds them helpful...

I found $469 for SFO - LHR with LHR - Montreal. Out 3/24, Rtn 4/4. Would make a nice trip but getting back to SFO is not cheap one way from Montreal.

Best I can find for an easy return to SFO is to finish journey in Vancouver. With a change in Salt Lake City it's not too far back to SFO. About $500 in March/ April next year.

We need to make a family trip back to the UK next year but with a 2 year old and a 5 year old the slight premium (all things considered) for direct flights might be well worth it.

Open to suggestions if anyone has a good idea for getting a cheap SFO to LHR return out of this.

I had the same problem. I have an aging grandfather in the Netherlands and this seemed like a great way to see him, but couldn't get SEA-AMS SEA-YVR to drop below $550, no matter how I played with dates and routing. $500 is a great deal, but its still too much for an impulse buy.

I can't believe I got in on this. I'm taking the hubby and son for spring break, now I just have to find a way back to the U.S. from YYZ.

Thank you OP!
