There is another round of cheap fares to St Thomas if you want to gamble on hurricane season. I just booked LAX-STT on Continental for $340ai, I think American may be even a few dollars cheeper. CO Miles = 8124. I did not check Americans miles

I'm seeing some 1-7 day trips in September through November on this itinerary on both AA and CO.
LAX-EWR-SJU-STT nets 8624 EQM/8260 RDM on CO for $366.10 AI, if you don't have any status. Elites 9124 EQM because of the 500 mile bump.
Dividing this out, it's 4.24 cpEQM for non-status, 4.01 cpEQM for elites.
AA is a bit cheaper, but I don't know the intricacies of their program, so I'll leave that calculation up to others. Though AA has a LAX-MCO-MIA-STT, so a more direct routing nets less miles.

Despite being ex-LAX, I'm out of vacation (LAX-NRT/HND-GMP/ICN-PEK-HKG-IST-LAX will do that to you), so I unfortunately can't take this deal, either. Also, out of disposable income.

CO fare doesn't appear to be available anymore. $353 ai from AA and $365 from DL still available; both starting in Sept.
How dicey would the weather be in Sept? I've never been and want to swim in some calm tropical ocean.

September unfortunately is the most Active month for hurricanes in the Caribbean and the forecast this year is for a pretty Busy hurricane season. If anyone if doing this as a turn, Beware you may get lots of questions from customs. They are not used to seeing mileage runs to STT.

Puerto Rico and the USVI do not require a passport nor do we have to endure customs.

ⅠAm pretty certain you need to go through Customs when departing STT to mainland US. I Travel to STT Fairly often and was just there in April and unless things have recently changed, you need to clear customs when traveling from STT to mainland. You do not need a passport when entering STT, and you may not need one when leaving STT, but I Did Go through customs in April.
