There are so many good places to eat in Chicago. Some of the best values and chances to try some new places include:
1. The Lobby at the Peninsula - One of the most elegant settings in Chicago with fantastic food and service.
2. Cafe des Architectes - One of the undiscovered gems in Chicago, with food that ranges from fantastic to out of this world. The setting is very elegant and the service is flawless.
3. Seasons - Very nice option as well, though I really like the first two better.

They claim they've cleaned up their act, but after what I thought was a complete disaster of a promotion in 2008 I'm taking a pass this year.
Among the problems last year:
Restaurant management who didn't know they were doing the promotion.
Offered only at odd times at many restaurants.
Fixed price deals that were very subpar or actually not a good value relative to what you could get off the regular menu.
I'll be interested to hear reports from this year.

Restaurant week has been extended through this Friday -- and the reservation books at many restaurants are wide-open. I haven't had any problems this or last year asking for the the RW menu. Yes, you might find better deals on the regular menu, but hey, it's an option.
It's the restaurant in the Sofitel, on the left side of the lobby. It is French, but modern; they recently hired Martial Noguier, who was the chef at one sixtyblue, and the reviews I've seen have been very positive. (I haven't eaten at either restaurant since the change.) I wouldn't worry about dress code -- indeed, there aren't many restaurants in town where I would worry.
