Drove by the Aurora, IL location yesterday. It's one minute north of I-88. Take the Farnsworth Road exit, go North, Farnsworth turns into Kirk Road at the first major intersection. It's about three miles South of Fermilab.
The buildnig faces East and is on the West side of Kirk Road. Building exterior is complete, the I-beams for the drive-in stalls are up to the North or the store. The parking lot looks to me to be ready to be paved. I'd say late August is probably a pretty good guess. I have already been singing the praises of strawberry limeades to family, friends and co-workers who do not get the chance to visit Sonics out west like I do. Now if we can just get a Mr. Hero here in Chicago, we'll be all set! --PP |

I'll have to try to get the address and load it into my GPS. I'll be in the Chicago area the next several days and just might have a craving for a Diet Cherry Limeade.
Bummer, they don't have it on the "Sonic Locator" on their web site. Doh - never mind. I just noticed that it's not open yet. Nearest open one appears to be in South Bend - not driving that far. ;) |

According to a post on a local bulletin board, they'll be opening in Aurora on the 19th! Since we still have a bit of summer ahead of us, it might be time to start planning the first Chicagolandsonicfillyourselfwithfooddo.

I have to drive up to Waubonsee Community College tomorrow, I'll loop by and report.
Last weekend they were working on the finishing touches on the canopy for the drive in stalls and there were a bunch of workers sitting out front in he dining chairs and tables working on assembling something, i don;t know what. The menu boards were all installed but the actual menu graphics were not yet in place. All signage was in and the reader board said "COMING SOON SONIC BOOM" --PP |
Confirmed! Opening 8/19!!
I went by this morning. The place is just about as ready as it can get before cooking the Chili Cheese Tots. Uniformed crew members (one on roller skates!) were windexing the drive-in menu boards, which have their menu graphics installed. All the lights are on, there is activity inside and if there weren't cars blocking the parking lot, I'd think it were open now. More uniformed crew members were sitting at hte tables in front doing something and I asked one of the car-hops (the one on roller skates) when they were opeing and she said on the 19th.
So there you have it! Now, who wanted to schedule the stuff your face with Sonic 'do?? --PP |

Sonic opens tomorrow!
The heart wants what it wants, and sometimes it wants Chili Cheese Tots and Cherry Limeade, and sometimes the heart is dashed on the concrete dividers of a strip mall parking lot. The other day, three very large men in a very small car rolled up behind the Sonic Drive-In in Aurora. The smell of tar was pungent. In nearby fields little yellow flags from new developments flapped in the wind. The largest of the men, in the passenger seat, with a stomach so vast and gelatinous it rested on the dashboard as if taking a lunch break, rolled down his window. His right arm hung over the window lip like a dead goose. "You people open yet?" he asked. Sonic general manager Ray Mejia shook his head. "Tuesday," he said. The man slapped his palm hard against the metal of the car door. "The 19th," Mejia said. It has been like this for weeks, since Sonic, the first in the Chicago area, Sonic No. 3,456 in the 55-year-old Oklahoma-based carhop chain, began showing signs of life—since its teenage trainees began learning how to roller-skate in the parking lot while balancing trays of milkshakes and the pavement was power washed and the new employees began eating lunch on the patio overlooking Kirk Road and strolling out back for smoke breaks or sneaking over to Starbucks. It opens tomorrow. For weeks, however, the line of cars has not stopped, the potential customers not ceased; they slow, beg for food, ask when, what day, what time—now? "This is craziness," Mejia said, and turned to meet the SUV that replaced the car of large men. "The 19th," he said. Next car. "The 19th," he said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entert...,5715865.story |
The buzz around Sonic seems to be similar to the buzz generated when Krispy Kreme rolled into town. Several years later, Krispy Kreme seems to have overshot market interest -- plus changing tastes / diet fads. Gotta wonder if Sonic will meet the same fate.
Have to say that a true drive in with carhops makes me pine for the days of Dog n Suds and A&W.... Yeah, some of them are still around, but not the same... I do know people who are nuts about Sonic, so I suspect that a controlled bit of growth will be a good thing. Culvers seems to have succeeded in this market. I could have sworn that Sonic made a run into Chicago a number of years ago. Maybe I'm thinking of Checkers as well, but there were two places on Mannheim (one in Bellwood at Washington -- that was definitely Checkers -- and one just past North Ave.) that opened and shut within the past ten years. Maybe one of those was a Rally's. |
