Minneapolis commuting--traffic/construction tips?

I'm working in MSP for the summer, and am hoping for some advice from locals. I'll be commuting from uptown (Lake Calhoun area) to Eagan. I was planning to take Lake Street to 35W south to 62 east to 77 south to 494 east. However, I noticed today while driving around that Lake Street and 35W more closely resemble gigantic piles of dirt rather than roads, and I'm worried that those areas will be a nightmare at rush hour.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience or advice for alternate routes? Thanks in advance.
