Vong’s Thai Kitchen

Vong’s Thai Kitchen
6 W Hubbard Street
http://www.vongsthaikitchen.com/

Just had dinner tonight here.

Started out with the tea smoked duck w/bun and crab/shrimp fritters.

Duck was dry and just ok. Crab/shrimp fritters tasted as if some old/bad seafood was added, taste was way off and not fresh.

For Entrees

A special of pan seared scallops and shrimp with a Veracruz like sauce, strange and not good.

Crabmeat Pad Thai was good but just as good is the $5 pad thai elsewhere.

My guess is if I had tried the curries I would have had the same attitude as the pad thai, probably good but just good does not justify the price as there is excellent elsewhere for less money.

I've gone a couple times and had an appetizer/entree/dessert special...I think it's about $25pp with a more limited menu choice (but includes an appetizer platter with about 4 items pp). Assuming they're still offering it, I thought it was worth the price. The pad thai I remembered was shrimp and crabmeat, which is something I haven't found in many places, was tasty and large enough to provide leftovers the next day.

This place was great several years back when it opened; I've heard of some recent reviews that suggest it is just mediocre. Glad to see a recent opinion.
I used to enjoy the spicy thai coconut chicken soup.

One of the best meals we ever had was here in its previous version (Vong's?).

Luckily a physician friend invited and paid. Something like $75 a person before wine.

I used to eat quite a bit at the restaurant (in Midtown East) but found it slipping, from 1999-2000 onwards.

I concur with the theme here - they have definitely not maintained the quality that they had when they first opened. I think that the food is rather bland.

This is typical LEYE -- a food standard that will please just about anybody. I really enjoy Tiparos on North Clark -- really good Thai.

Also, Singha in River North, just over the river, is another good spot.

The place has gone downhill fast since it first opened. About two years ago, I opened my cloth napkin to find cooked, fried rice inside of it. Yuck!

Just another example of an upscale place opening, then downscaling itself to please the masses who claim that it was too expensive. Not a bad place now, but I do miss the old days.
