Chicago's James Beard nominees

The nominations for 2006. Nominees arose from an open call narrowed down by an appointed committee. The final awards will be handed out on May 8, 2006 in New York City. Chicagoans earned several spots on the list, so you might want to check out these contenders:

Outstanding Restaurateur — Richard Melman of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. www.leye.com

Outstanding Restaurant — Everest, 440 S. LaSalle St., and Spiaggia, 980 N. Michigan Ave. (Everest's Jean Joho was also named to the Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America. Spiaggia's Tony Mantuano won Best Chef: Midwest last year.)

Best New Restaurant — Alinea, 1723 N. Halsted St., as well as former Chicago chef Paul Bartolotta's new Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare at Wynn in Las Vegas.

Rising Star Chef of the Year — Graham Elliot Bowles of Avenues at The Peninsula Chicago, 108 E. Superior St.

Outstanding Service — Tru, 676 N. St. Clair St.

Best Chef: Midwest — Shawn McClain of Spring, 2039 W. North Ave., and Carrie Nahabedian of Naha, 500 N. Clark St.
