Wolfgang Puck Grand Cafe (Evanston)
For a birthday celebration we decided on a movie and dinner at Puck's, here is my short review:
The place was packed, afaik they don't do reservations so we waited at the bar for 30 minutes with our pager, the wait was well worth it, their bar selection is wonderful, by the time our table was ready I had downed several cocktails
The decor is pretty nice, what you'd expect from a chain like this yet not too overwhelming...
Server arrived took one persons drink order and returned for the rest... needless to say that this guy wasn't too efficient...
Menu was ok, nothing special...
I ordered:
Chicken and cheese Quesadilias
The special: a signature meatloaf dish
Others at the table had a Satay appetizer, duck and a chicken pasta dish (that arrved without chicken and got returned)...
Appetizer was great, good portion and well filled, by the time I had had enough it went around the table for the others.
Then the meatloaf... yikes... the meatloaf... You need to understand that I am not from here, so any chance I get to try dishes like this I will, but this was just sad... A completely tasteless and badly presented dish, thankfully it was served with decent mashed potatoes because I wasn't interested in returning it as it was late... When I inquired why it tasted so bland the server explained that it is how "the europeans" eat it... Coming from europe myself it's needless to say that this was total BS...
My desert was a Custard selection, the highlight of the dinner.
Total bill for 4 incl. drinks (no wine): $150 excl. tip.
We won't be going back there as it's simply NOT worth the money and a disgrace that a chef like Puck is willing to stick his name on it.
Reviews at Metromix are almost ALL ONES'S with people complaining they can't give ZERO...

Eclectic menu and friendly waitstaff are only two of the elements that go in to making a restaurant last.
