Upper Peninsula, Michigan

I've just moved to the UP a few months ago. Just curious if there's anything interesting I could visit around here.

Any kind of suggestions are welcome.

I'm already in the UP right now. I come from abroad, but I've spent many years in upstate New York.

Lots of things to see and do in the UP. You just need to do a little research. Sharon posted some good links for places and events.

Avoid Mackinac Island. It's more run-down than historic. Plus, the entire island smells of horse crap.

You are in a very beautiful part of the country. Maybe go to Isle Royal National Park.

Disagree. Mackinac Island is worth a trip. I'd say go in shoulder season vs. full-on summer when it's a zoo.

Cheers.

Make sure you do a lot now before the sun sets for 6 months and you have to travel in tunnels beneath the snow.

Check this out: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/06/tr...beer.html?_r=0

Mackinac Island is home of the Pink Pony where you can enjoy a delicious Rum Runner on the patio looking out on Bahama blue water. Obviously go in the summer; I think Mackinac shuts down in the winter. Take a bike ride around the island too.

Check out Traverse City nearby.

Two notes: Northern Michigan (particularly the route known as the Tunnel of Trees) is beautiful in the fall. Driving from the Little Traverse Bay area to Mackinac Island would make a great day trip.

Also, Traverse City to Mackinac Island (well, Mackinaw City) is 100-125 miles depending on which route you take. So, nearby relatively speaking, but not really day-trip distance unless you really enjoy looking out the car window.

The Pink Pony is open year round IIRC. I think there are about 700 residents on the island in the winter.

Mackinac Island is accessible via ferry through early January, although not as many things open in the winter. After that & once the lake freezes, it's accessible via snowmobile on the "Ice Bridge".

There's a 72-DVD available re: Mackinac Island that details it in the winter (well, all year round actually, but a focus on the winter). It's called "Ice Bridge: Mackinac's Hidden Season".

Two 90-second trailers in the link below:

http://www.icebridgemovie.com/Movie_Trailer.html

"The 72 minute film begins with a fantastic overview of Mackinac Island summers. We then experience the gorgeous Fall and Christmas seasons as the island’s population drops to less than 500 and the lakes begin to freeze over. The film features ‘never seen before’ footage of the island in ‘deep winter’ and of the phenomenal ‘ice bridge’. After surprisingly suspenseful scenes and events, the film ends full-circle with a beautiful celebration of summer’s return."

Obviously more to do on the island during the warm months, but don't necessarily write off the winter months. And evidently Xmas & NYE are a lot of fun on the island.

Cheers.

And get to know how to ski on ice better.

I've had lots of winter fun in the UP, but you have to learn to love the snow, appreciate the ice, and deal well with the rather cold temperatures at this time of the year.
