Doha on a Friday

I've just booked myself arriving DOH early morning, flying out just after midnight - a stop of about 17 hours. Was hoping to do some sightseeing in Doha (and rest my head in a hotel briefly, thanks to QR). Alas this scenario is booked for a Friday... how closed/dead/uninteresting will Doha be on a Friday? My primary interest is food/society/markets and maybe a short excursion. Should I absolutely change the date?

No need to absolutely change the date. Markets and stores will be mostly open. I am not sure about cultural events, however.

In fact, Qatar has been considering changing its weekend to Saturday and Sunday!

Well what is there to do in Doha on a weekend? I'm thinking of giving it and QR a try this weekend.

People have said it is like DXB was 10 years ago. True?

Go to the Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton etc. and have a Friday Brunch. In the Gulf, they are spectacular.

I found out that the Intercontinental is a pretty popular place. The nightclub was quite fun and full last weekend.
