Security procedures at AUH
I flew from AUH for the first time yesterday, going to YYZ with Etihad. I arrived at the airport the previous night and spent the night in the lounge. Upon arrival at the gate in the morning, there was extensive security, where they opened and examined everyone's carry-on, swabbed all sorts of items and did an extensive body pat down. I've never experienced anything like this before at any airport gate. I flew from DXB a few years ago and there was nothing like this at all, and that's in the same country. Just curious if this is standard procedure at AUH?

I think flights towards North America/ the UK are often subject to dedicated screenings before departure in the Middle East. I've never seen a 100% check of all pax but maybe they did a random and full spot check on the day of your flight or any kind of intelligence/ tip off justified such a check.
Additional gate security is common in DXB as well - I have seen such security for all my flights to the UK - and I have been selected for special screening several times (I think being a solo male traveler young to mid age carrying a laptop is one of their flags for a special search). They never checked me when family was in tow.
I've also had gate screenings in Doha for flights to London.
