Shopping for electronics in Dubai

This might sound as a silly question but I searched this forum for 15 mins and couldn't find anything. We are interested in buying a smartphone (probably android) and possibly an ipad too. I checked online prices at cellsouq and they seem very competitive (e.g. Samsung S5 ~1,800aed) - my impression was they are much better than UK prices and only slightly worse than US prices. Will we able to find this kind of prices in the city? Where would you normally go for this kind of shopping? Thanks

I find Deira City Center is the mall that is easy to get to and noticeably cheaper than most other malls for both electronics and other stuff. It is only a few stops from airport. It has many shops selling phones such as Sharaf, Axiom and Carrefour. You should push for a discount off any list price and you should check prices in a number of shops first so you can bargain. Carrefour is good and you can bargain in there.

Check that ipad has facetime before you buy.

+1 for Carrefour, prices are competitive. Sharaf DG and Plug-ins are the other electronic shops.

Because facetime is banned in the UAE and some/many/all ipads sold do not have it installed. Maybe no longer an issue?

I wouldn't worry about the face time issue, as you will be able to install it yourself.

Regarding where to buy, I second checking out Carrefour and other hypermarkets.... Sometimes they and the electronics dealers (such as sharaf dg) have their sale promotions and drop the prices on select products, so it won't hurt to shop around. I don't know of any of them that post their sales brochure online, but many do send sms promotions.

Unfortunately you just missed the Gitex electronics event that happens twice a year.

The next one will be in April and then in October. So if you trip to Dubai happens to coincide with Gitex check it out the deals can be way over the top sometimes.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! It seems that Carrefour and Sharaf DG get the most votes, we will make sure to visit both. We are visiting end of November, I will report back after that.

The electronic stores in Deira City Center tend to be in the same section of the mall so it will be easy to check out several of them.

Came back from the trip. In the end we only looked for a specific iPad and compared prices in Carrefour, Sharaf DG, Virgin stores, Jumbo electronics and maybe others I'm forgetting. Everyone had exactly the same price as the Apple store. I'm not particularly good at haggling, but I tried to ask for a lower price and I was ignored; some of the sellers even walked away from me. In any case, Apple prices in the UAE are much better than the UK, so we bought the iPad at full price.
