ideas for a day in DC?

my family recently relocated to the DC area, and through an interesting quirk, we have MLK day off but the daycare does not. so naturally, we'd like to spend a day to ourselves!

we've done the smithsonian, the monuments, and the zoo. does anyone have ideas that are metro-accessible and can be accomplished before 4pm (so we can get home in time to pick up the kids)?

we're pretty much open to anything in DC or montgomery county (esp. rockville or bethesda areas), but crossing into virginia, prince george, or baltimore is a stretch.

thanks!

On any other day I'd have all kinds of thoughts, but this year MLK day falls on the day before the Inauguration, and DC is going to be absolutely mobbed with visitors. All the hotels are sold out, Metro will be packed as I imagine all the tourist sites will be too, even though you're not looking for the "mainstream" stuff I imagine just getting around town would be a challenge,

How about Annapolis? You could easily get there in an hour or so, have a nice lunch somewhere, explore the town, maybe a visit to the Naval Academy...easily be home by 4:00.

How about Baltimore

You could go to the Maryland African American History & Culture Museum on Pratt St in Baltimore, then walk to the National Aquarium, restaurants, and shops in the Inner Harbor.

Take a camera down to the Mall and document one of the most crowded, historic MLK celebrations...it'll make for a great story for your kids in a couple years.

i really want to stay away from the mall (besides, i'll be there the next day with 2-4 million of my closest friends anyway...).

the problem with baltimore is the time involved getting to union station and taking the marc train. the same applies to annapolis. even if i drive, i'd be concerned about traffic inbound for the inauguration.
