Fallingwater

I'm planning a trip to Fallingwater before AA drops the LGA-PIT route. They recently added a Sunset Tour on Saturdays, which sounds like the in-depth tour except I think they add cocktails and canapes on the deck. Has anyone taken it yet? If not, any comments on the In-Depth Tours would also be appreciated.

I've only ever done the regular tour, but enjoyed that. You might want to combine Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob into one trip.

Definitely do it while you can (Fallingwater that is). I only did the regular tour, but it was beautiful as is the surrounding forest/river area. Very nice in the spring/summer (btw: I went in May '05).

Then again, I'm from Baltimore and gas wasn't so expensive then, so we made it a road trip from home...

Thanks--I was indeed planning to go to Kentuck Knob as well.

I've been fascinated by Fallingwater ever since I saw a book about it years ago, and thought I would probably enjoy a longer, smaller tour. I rather doubt that the Sunset Tour is worth the extra $$ (it would take a lot of wine I'm not gonna be able to drink if I'm driving), but something about hanging around and pretending to be a guest at a party there seems appealing.

wish I was on the Sunset tour, I have a regular tour booked for this Saturday. To make things even worse I have to fly out of EWR give me LGA or JFK anyday..... I live in Queens, by the way. I'm looking forward to my visit, enjoy yours as well. Sorry to here AA is dropping LGA-PIT, only airline left from NYC- PIT will be Jetblue?

only thing left now, it to fly 1 hr 15min and then drive 2 hours back east to our destination.

according to the website, horsd'oeurves are served, and seems similar to the other tour. I would guess so, but haven;t been on any tour yet, so I can't comment.

Please let me know how you like the regular tour. AA drops NS service to PIT at the beginning of November, so I'll go before then. I had assumed US still goes there, but who wants to fly THEM?
Since I'm planning to fly in that morning, I'd much prefer an afternoon or evening tour.

Hi just came back from the weekend at fallingwater/PIT. The reg. tour was quite nice, only we didn't get to go into the kitchen and staff quarters (also no pics allowed indoors). During the 4th of July weekend it was packed to the gills, very, very busy!!!! I was expecting the house to be larger, I hate low ceilings. Worth the trip, but bring your GPS, for help once you get off the interstate.

If I was to do it over again, I'd try the "sunset tour" :-:

Well, I didn't do the "sunset tour," but I did take the in-depth one, and was happy to have done so. It was great having only a small group, all of whom were pretty serious about the house, and a bit more time. The kitchen was interesting, the staff rooms (which are now offices and retain only the original wood cabinetry) not very. I'd been warned about the interiors and seen other Wright homes, so my expectations of the interior were pretty low. I actually liked the great room better than I expected, but for me nothing in the house (either looking inside or outside) was as great as looking at the house from the Viewpoint.
I did have Hertz NeverLost, but heeded the warning on the Fallingwater website and managed to get it to give me the same directions to Fallingwater, though it told me I had arrived about 1/4 mile too soon. It did not have Kentuck Knob in its system, so that was useless. Then it sent me on 10 miles of winding road with a 45 mph speed limit as the "shortest time" back to Pittsburgh, so I am not sure GPS is the answer.
