Kimpton hotels and parking

Hello Washington experts-

Given the choice between the Helix and Topaz hotels (both part of the Kimpton chain) which would you go for. Have a reasonable rate available at both, but Topaz is $25 extra. The location of the latter seems better (closer to Dupont Circle), but perhaps those in the know can advise if there's much real difference?

Second, I feel opposed on principle to being hoodwinked by obligatory valet parking () -- are there any other options for overnight parking (on a weekend) in DC?

Thanks!

Can't comment on the parking because I use the Metro to get into DC, but, I've stayed at the Topaz a couple of times and like it very much. Some of the other DC Kimpton hotels have not gotten great ratings on sites like Tripadvisor.

Hmm, interesting. Since I'm driving south to Richmond the following evening, is it worth parking overnight at DCA (where I'm flying into) and using the Metro to get into the city?

Thanks for the Topaz advice!

Any chance you could fly into DCA and not pick up the car until you are ready to leave for Richmond? Maybe one of the Enterprise deals where they bring the car to you?

Probably too complicated but worth a shot.

Oh, actually, it's my girlfriend's car! She's driving up to DC to meet me, so we need somewhere to keep it...

definitely stay at topaz - there are plenty of parking lots around there...not sure of the prices though.

Thanks!
On the weekend, you should be able to park on the street for free. Depending on the neighborhood there may be more/less parking available, but meters are free on Sunday and some are free on Saturday. Also depending on the location, street parking may be free during the day - but watch the street signs - as if you're parked during hours that are not allowed you will be towed! In the areas you're talking about street parking should be safe enough and if you don't mind driving around for 15 minutes or so you should be able to find a spot.

DC Kimptons

I found this thread while looking for info on the Kimpton hotels in DC - I don't have a car to worry about, but was a little concerned about some of the TripAdvisor reviews of the hotels. Can anyone expound on the pros/cons of any of the DC Kimptons? I care about comfortable beds, enough room in the room for a suitcase plus people, clean bathrooms (don't need to be huge, but decent sized) and general all-over reasons to rank one property over the other. The rates seem to be about the same, so if you have experience with any of these, I'd appreciate the input.
