Traffic Around IAD

Hi All -

I will be flying into IAD on a Wed afternoon. Ariving at around 4:45pm - how long will it take to get from the airport up to Rockville, MD. I know rush hour in DC can be bad ...

While summer traffic is noticeably lighter than after Labor Day, you need to allow 45 minutes or more for the drive during the evening rush hour.

Getting from IAD to the Beltway is no problem (15 minutes or so). The Beltway (I-495 North) usually is quite slow all the way to your exit for I-270 North, and I-270 is carrying an awful lot of traffic north at that time too. There are HOV lanes on I-270 which might help you if you qualify.

The day in question is going to be Wed Sep 29th. Not sure how (if at all) this changes things

Add another 10-15 minutes to the drive. All depends on how traffic is that day, but you're travelling after everyone is back in school and at work, so levels will increase from summer.
