Wait - you had a Cheesesteak or Roast Pork at John's? If you're still in town don't miss getting a Tastykake or 5! I'm a pie fan (always the baked ones that come in cardboard not the glazed ones in a bag, but someone might change my mind...). You might also try the Krimpets....can't really go wrong!
Unfortunately I left town a few days ago. The tastykakes sound pretty yummy though.

Depends on the location; for many Wiz is the default. At most places you can request Provolone. In my many years, I've never considered requesting American.

My answer is the same as it has been since I first went in 2003: Jim's Steaks on South Street. Though if their line is too long Ishakbibble's across the street can do in a pinch.

Thanks for the quick reply.
So we spent Saturday at Longwood Gardens (I do not know how I never heard of the place but it is not to be missed, simply first rate all around) and I was excited we would be staying overnight in Philly which meant getting cheesesteaks on Sunday. Very disappointed that some of the recommendations above are not available on Sunday...so we went to Jim's (20 people waiting in line outside on a Sunday!). The wife and kid's loved it, and mine was good, but I was really looking forward to one of the roast pork recommendations....
Oh, well. On the plus side, since I have now been awoken to Longwood, we will be going back with better planned sidetrips for sandwiches.

I lived about 15 minutes from Longwood Gardens for many years and it is indeed fantastic. If youre in that area again and are a fan of botanic gardens, I would strongly urge you to take another few hours to visit Mt. Cuba Center, about 15 minutes away in Delaware. It is another former DuPont estate that has been converted to a showplace and research center for native plants. For many years, it was incredibly inspiring to me as a local gardener. The Winterthur museum and estate is also very close byanother fabulous set of gardens and plantings, but even more impressive is the museum, which has the countrys best collection of American decorative arts. I like to call it the Antiques Roadshow Museum.
