4 Hour Layover at IAD

I am traveling from SDF to Reykjavik via IAD and I have a 4 hour layover. Since, alas, I am flying economy on Icelandair, I don't have any lounge access through them and since I am not flying on a SkyTeam carrier, I can't buy a day pass to the AF lounge (if anyone knows differently, please do let me know!).

So, assuming I cannot get lounge access, does anyone have any suggestions on where I can set up camp and word, read, relax a bit reasonably comfortably without spending a fortune? I haven't been to Dulles in about 20 years, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Loungebuddy.com can get you into the Turkish Airlines or Lufthansa lounges for $45. The Udvar-Hazy Center - National Air and Space Museum that is located on the Dulles Airport property is a great museum, and is accessible by public bus from Dulles, but four hours could be rushed to get down there and back.

I would have suggested Udvar-Hazy, but you FI doesn't participate in Pre-Check and you are in the back, so not even a priority lane at TSA. Those lines can be monumental so you really need to be checked in and headed for the checkpoint no later than T-90.

While you won't find anything with a Michelin star or two at IAD, there are a significant number of decent places to eat where you can hang out and have a nice slow meal and spend a lot less than you will on a lounge.

Unfortunately, FI is on concourse A, so I won't be able to use either of those lounges and none of the other lounge passes get me into the AF lounge beyond 2:30pm.

Re: Pre-check, if my itinerary begins at SDF on UA, will my pre-check status carry through to IAD?

since you are on the airside, you can freely move between the terminals. You have plenty of time to do that since most of the travel between terminals takes 15-20 minutes and you don't have to go thru security checks.

i would not suggest getting out of the airport for a 4 hour layover it is too risky and not worth it. Just use loungebuddy app as suggested by others and stay in the airport lounge.

All IAD gates other than IAB (not relevant here) are airside of the same checkpoint, so you will be able to move between any two gates without clearing a checkpoint. A to B is easy as it is the same physical concourse.

But, if you leave the terminal, you will have to reclear a checkpoint and your onward BP won't include Pre-Check because FI does not participate.

Thanks, everyone! I had no idea they were all airside. That helps a great deal!

LoungeBuddy quotes $45 for the TK lounge, $59 for LH. TK is also closer to your departing gate and has a better view, so this should be an easy call. Be advised that you may have to wait for a bartender (LH is better in that apect) and that the food is consistently great (don't forget to grab some Turkish Delight at the front desk, especially if you've ever read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). There's also a shower there, and if you want to nap the lounges in the quiet nook by the bar area ought to help.

Your timing also ensures you'll avoid the worst of the early-evening crowds. By the time you arrive, most of the evening bank of TATL flights will be well into boarding.
