Newark Light Rail

We'll be taking the Newark Light Rail from Penn Station to NJPAC early Sunday afternoon. We would walk but if it rains, I'd rather take the light rail. We've never taken it before and I'm wondering about accepted payment forms of the ticket machines.

Is it coin-only exact change?
Do they take bills?
Do they take AMEX or VISA?
Also, are they typically on time?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

How are you getting to Newark Penn Station? If you're taking NJT Rail, I believe that at least some NJT Rail tickets include free travel on the light rail.

Yep:

Also, it seems like $2.35 would cover the light rail and a common transfer.

The NJT kiosks take my Amex, Visa and Mastercards. Taking US cash notes and non-penny coins is still around.

We took the PATH from the WTC. Not sure if that would have qualified us for a free ticket each way. We ended up walking because it was easier and faster than waiting for the light rail.
