dc mall fireworks viewing
the "weekend" section of the wash post has a list of available rooftops for viewing. there are also a couple of cruise boats that park in the correct place.

We always went to the area in front of the Wash Monument. Enough space, and right under the fireworks. Security screening slows things down a bit, but not that much.
We'd always arrive 1/2 hour or so before the show, not making a day out of it, and would work our way out as the show ends.

Actually, for the home viewers watching on PBS, the fireworks were actually coming from a videotape.
