Early morning breakfast suggestions near White House?

I'll be taking Metro from DCA 5:30 am-ish and need to be at the US Dept of the Interior Museum by 8:15 am. I'd like to have a leisurely, sit-down breakfast, then stand at the Pennsylvania Ave gates to marvel at the White House as the sun rises.

Is Lincoln's Waffle Shop gross or greasy-good? Any casual early morning breakfast place suggestions in the area are appreciated. TIA.

Before 7 am your best bet is probably the hotels-- The Hay Adams has the Lafayette and the Willard has Cafe du Parc.

The bad news is they charge the now usual extortionate prices for hotel breakfast but the good news is they are both nice hotels with some history and character (in fact the word "lobbyist" supposedly comes from the people that would hang out in the lobby of the Willard).

A few other places will open at 7 am (like the Paul bakeries), and then more at 7:30 (like Teaism, if that menu appeals).

Coming off a red eye casually dressed at o'dark thirty, I had less formal eateries in mind, but thanks for the hotel suggestions. I did come across a couple properties that don't serve that early, but I'll investigate further.

Unfortunately, the Paul Bakery website is under construction, but I'm drooling over their Facebook photos. https://www.facebook.com/paul1889.usa/photos

Interesting, Teaism has an asian twist. https://www.teaism.com/

These would be my choices too. They're both lovely iconic hotels with interesting histories.

Aack, $35 for the "Hay Adams American Breakfast" and $25 for the "Continental Breakfast", not that I would want to order either, but not for the surroundings, highway robbery. http://www.hayadams.com/washington-dc-breakfast

Can you have breakfast for free in a DCA lounge before taking the Metro into the District?

There's a Hyatt Regency built on top of a Metro station a few blocks from the Willard. It must have a restaurant that's open for breakfast.

Hmmm, the AA AC wouldn't be a terrible idea and they open at 04:30. I wish they had showers! https://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInform...s/dca-club.jsp

Thanks, that might be an option.

Probably too late at 7:00 a.m. but Founding Farmers does a good breakfast not far from the White House: http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/locations/dc/

I love the Founding Farmers concept. 7 am is a little late, but it's definitely on my map now. ^

Have you checked how early sunrise is in DC at this time of year? A hotel breakfast restaurant isn't going to open before 6 am at the earliest, expect possibly at airport hotels, and is likely to take over an hour.

Maybe you should just buy pastry or a breakfast sandwich and coffee and find a nice park bench near the White House.

We were a bit surprised to find that reservations may actually be needed for breakfast, but we were seated without and they do have bar seating. We were there last month. At the moment we are in LA.

I did check.

The sun will begin rising at 5:43 am the day I arrive, and I was conscientious about the words I posted - "as the sun rises", not "at sunrise". https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/...th=6&year=2016

I was more than a bit surprised they are North Dakota farmers!

Dinner there that evening before Amtraking to Wilmington, DE is also an option.

OK, but my impression is that if the weather says that sunrise is at X:YZ am, it begins to get light at about (X-1):YZ and the period when the light is pretty is generally the hour before X:YZ am.

The Willard: http://www.cafeduparc.com/Menus
Yes, but for $15 at the Willard you can get two eggs any style, toast, bacon and potatoes, which isn't too bad a deal.

Or, if you wait til 7, there's a place called West Wing Cafe on 11th st (so about 5 blocks from the WH but on the other side from the Interior Museum). It's pretty casual/cheap/good.

There are a bunch of Starbucks that open early, and also there's an Au Bon Pain on 11th that opens early I think.
