PIT "expansion?"

When US de-hubbed PIT, the airport walled off the ends of concourses A and B. Now it looks like the end of A has been re-opened. Some new carpeting, but only two gates in use, by Southwest and United.

Does anyone know why this happened? I doubt that Southwest or United are looking to make PIT a focus city.

I don't think there's a public reason. Rumor I heard was that PIT was trying to get as much room for Peoplexpress in C as they wanted to make PIT a focus city...well that turned out well.

I was at PIT today, and C is cleared out. JetBlue is now in D. The only plane at C was an Xtra Airways plane.

The PEX strategy was interesting -- move into hubs that the majors have moved out of -- but execution was of course a full disaster. Perhaps another entrant will come along and do it better but airports like PIT had better get their money up front.
