Whoa, lots of info missing!
What happens after your flight from Rome? I assume you're all proceeding to another flight, but to where and how many hours later? Is there a reason your bags won't be tagged to your final destination? You'd still have to get your bags after Immigration and go through Customs, but in many cases you'd just hand them over at a transfer desk after Customs. You'd still have your carry-on bags, of course. Hopefully you'll already have the boarding passes for that next flight.
If you're transferring to an airline without an interline agreement for the transfer of bags (eg., Southwest) you may still be able to check your bags upon arrival before heading to the limo. If not, then you'll hve to keep your bags and get back to the airport in time to check in. Someitmes you'll see here that you can't check bags more than X hours before your flight, but I've also run into cases (e.g., US Airways at DCA) where the airline said that even for a late flight we could check bags as long as their counter was open.
