Be aware also that baggage claim at PHL is notoriously slow. Your 8 hour connection might be more like 7 by the time you get your bag.

Agreed you should try to check your luggage through.

That guide confirms that there is no luggage storage at PHL unless you have access to the US club; you could leave your luggage there "at your own risk."
