The lack of replies is fairly accurate commentary upon the sad state of dining in Cancun: there aren't any really good restaurants. Expect to get TGIF type food, sometimes at cheaper prices and sometimes not. I never found anything worth mentioning; the closest I know about is 100 miles away (south of Tulum) and that is a dive (sand floor, etc.) but with great food. Nothing like that in Cancun though.

You are entitled to your opinion but as someone who goes to Cancun annually, I think you are behind the times. See http://cancun-hotels.tripadvisor.com...Peninsula.html for a different view of Cancun. Search for restaurants.
The area is filled with good restaurants. La Habichuela, Puerto Madero, Laguna Grill, La Dolce Vita, La Madonna, La Casa de Las Margaritas, El Pescador, Harry's, La Palapa Belga, J. C Capitan, Mitachi Sea-side Grill are all excellent.
I was hoping to hear from recent travelers about restaurants that I have yet to try. TripAdvisor has more tourist participation and was most helpful. FlyerTalk's Mexican forum lacks activities.
That said, Cancun has a lot of tourist trap restaurants that are best avoided. However, don't judge its restaurant scene by these. There are good meals to be had. If you haven't tried Puerto Madero, try it on your next visit.

I haven't been to Cancun very recently but my folks go at least once a year. I really enjoyed La Dolce Vita, Cambalache but my favorite dive is El Tacolote downtown. I checked and it seems to still be there.
Cancun isn't as cheap as it once was all those years ago when I went for Spring Break. I think we ate almost exclusively at 100% Natural and Mr. Papa's! We drank much more than we ate.

Just back from the Royal Mayan in Cancun. Great trip. Last week's weather report was iffy. Actual weather was spectacular. One of our best weeks ever (my wife says I say that most every year!).
The beach was a disaster. Shallow and rocky, with huge rocks in the water. But at the Royal Mayan it was deep enough for sun worshippers to have the lounges under palapas and there was bar service available.
Cancun restaurants were excellent. We went to Harry's for the first time and had a great meal. It is not cheap but we got out of there for about $55 a head including one drink each and bottled water. We sat outside overlooking the lagoon. The decor was beautiful and the service excellent. The steak was as good as any I've had in Cancun and cooked just like I ordered it -- very rare.
Next door is Puerto Madero, one of our all time favorite steak and sea food restaurants. We did not have time to try it this trip but friends did and raved about it. It is on my next year's list.
Also for the first time we went to Lemoncello. What a great restaurant. The setting is beautiful, food excellent and fairly priced and service superb. We have added it to our must do list for next year.
We also ate at La Madonna at La Isla. Some of its items are very pricey, but its pastas are not. We had a very enjoyable meal there.
One of our Cancun favorites was La Casa de Las Margaritas also at La Isla. We were disappointed and will not go back. The food ranged from OK to bad, really bad. Where colorful and not overpriced, there are too many other good choices.
We did not have time to get to the Laguna Grill, a must do for our next trip. We did New Year's at the Royal Mayan
We went downtown to Market 28 for lunch one day. The food was reasonably priced and excellent. Most of the people eating there were Mexican. We took the R-2 bus downtown and walked about 5 blocks to the market. Its shops were mostly flea market type stalls although a couple were air conditioned. Prices with a little bargaining were good. Its pharmacy had the best prices we found in Cancun but we did not check prices at Walmart, Sams or Costco.
It was a great trip for us even though we were almost 5 hours late arriving and an hour late leaving. The airport was a zoo both coming and going.
Leaving we got to the airport at 12:50 pm for a 3:20 pm flight. We were flying Delta and the lines were close to two hours long (other airlines had similar or longer lines). As Medallion flyers, we got into the business/first class line and still took almost an hour(40 minutes to the counter, 15 with a new poorly trained agent)to get our boarding passes. After that except for the delay and three gate changes things went well and we made it home without incident.

If anyone needs an entertainment-plus card I have one that expires March 1. It gets you 2 for 1 meals at a number of good restaurants... you can check this website for more details http://www.entertainment-plus.net/index.cfm?sfgdata=4
