Easiest way from Cancun to Belize

I am going to a wedding in Cancun the first week of June '08. I have always wanted to visit Belize and since Cancun/Riviera Maya are relatively close to Belize , what is the quickest and easiest way to get there. I have checked a number of sites ( ITA, Kayak etc. ) but every option seems to be through DFW, MIA, IAH , even the carriers like Mexicana' Prices are in the 800 to 900 dollar range and may involve an overnight. Question is : Are there any direct flights from Cancun to Belize City, or at least connecting easily through Mexico City that I am not finding. Alternatively , is it possibile to drive down the coast and if so , how long would it take? Thank you in advance for your help

You really can't get to Belize from Cancún anymore. AeroCaribe used to fly several times a week, but once they got merged into Click they stopped flying into BZE. None of the tiny local carriers like TropicAir or Maya fly there either.

You can take a bus - they are pretty nice with roomy seats and food service - for something like $30 if I remember right. It's a long trip though...count on about 6 or 7 hours, with a change of busses and bus companies in the middle of the jungle.

The other option is to fly to Tikal and then from there back to Belize City on TropicAir. All of these flights are going to be on puddle-jumpers. Belize is absolutely worth it!
