San Miguel

Hi all can you please tell me how long the trip from BJX Guanajuato/ Leon to San Miguel is and the best way to do the trip (Taxi, Bus, Private car?). Also any information on San Miguel such as places to see, Places to eat at and bars to drink at would be great.

Thanks.

I would take a bus from the airport to San Miguel. It's usually the cheapest and most enjoyable. Primera Plus and ETN are both good bets. I think it would be about a 1.5-2 hr ride. If you can, check out the Sri Lankan restaurant. It's really good if you enjoy the sub continent cuisine.

San Miguel De Allende

Has anyone been to San Miguel de Allende lately? I'm looking for a place to stay in the center of things (with wireless internet), and advice on how many days we will need to really get to know the area? Also, should we do a day trip to the Leon, Guanajuato area or stay there a night or two? Does anyone remember the transportation bus/car/mini van they took from MEX, and would u recommend it? TIA

p.s. i did a search which came up with very little so please be nice!

We have a house there.......

I would give yourself 5 days to get to know the place... although many of us can spend months there.

A wonderful B and B is Casa Calderoni. Until we bought our house we would stay there. ( not sure about wireless but they do have a hight speed connectiona dn a computer to use)

I would spend a day and night in Guanajuato. Never been to Leon...not sure I want to.

If you PM I can give you suggestions for tranportation from the airport.....

We flew from Tijuana to Leon and hired a driver to take 4 of us to San Miguel. Very reasonable, particularly as it was the middle of the night and two of our party were on a flight that was two hours late. (They were coming from LAX)

Guanajauto is beautiful and well worth a trip. We also hired a driver to take us to Patzcuaro which was wonderful. We returned by bus from Patzcuaro to Morelia then to Leon. They gave us a snack - white bread cheese sandwich and water - and it was an interesting ride. You won't meet many tourists on that route but it's a good opportunity to find out how bad you Spanish really is.

As coplatsat said, there isn't much to see in Leon, although I was amazed at the hundreds and hundreds of shoe boxes tied together in groups of about 40 being shipped out by bus.

There are lots of photos of San Miguel, Las Terrazas, the Tijuana airport, and Patzcuaro here

We stayed at a 2 br 2 ba casita at Las Terrazas and my friends have returned there three times since. ]

Maybe add Guadalejara

We really enjoyed our trip to Telequepaque in Guadalajara. Stayed at a darling B&B Casa de los Flores. Loved Patzcauro too in Michuocan stayed at an even more wonderful bed and breakfast can't remember the name but wonderful. SMG is very American full of expats but very nice too.

I received an invitation to stay in a hacienda there last March.

I declined. No golf. No spa. No beach. No casino. Hilly terrain.

I just got back from 10 days in San Miguel! I had a great time. I stayed at an amazing house called Casa Hyder. I think 6-10 days is about enough time to spend there. There are some great bars like Mama Mia's and if you go out be sure to have a late night burger in the main square. As it has been said there are loads of US expats.

If you are into golf there are some good courses near by and it’s a novelty to have a caddy. The best thing I did was with a group of my mates go four wheeling to the hot springs! I flew into Leon and it takes about 90 minutes by car to San Miguel

Second the idea of going to Guanajuato. Pretty city. The Museo de Momias is a bit overrated.

Hyder House in San Miguel de Allende

Hobarthoney - Were you a guest at the Hyder House or did you rent it? I've been trying to find how to rent it, but there are no rental listings. I've heard you have to have connections with the Hyders.

The underground "freeways" are amazing! Former underground rivers (mining tunnels?) now used to get traffic around the city without clogging surface streets. Opera house quite interesting, and I was fading from the altitude at the famous artist home which was not that interesting. Diego Rivera? University city. If returning to the area I would try staying in Guanajuato.

I agree! Gunajuato is a great alternative aside from the typical places people would go to in Mexico (MEX, PVR, CUN, etc...) You should definately try to check it out!
