Today, Wednesday, May 24th, the volcanic ash is traveling towards the southeast: Alert level remains at Phase 3.

*Since yesterday flights going to the coast towards Cancun from CDMX for instance have been at times on a different path to avoid the ash according to online reports.

*The 12 kilometer radius is still in effect, but some tick-tock creators figured that didn't apply to them. There's videos of them up there, one with a half mask respirator on😧

Recap of the last few days in Puebla: The most affected area currently

*IMSS (Government operated Hospitals) are on standby and prepared

*National Guard has been delegated to remove volcanic ash from the streets and public walkways

*NG is still conducting a recon of all the evacuation routes and erecting signage and displaying maps

*NG has been preparing shelters for food/temporary housing

*Residents have been requested to prepare emergency backpacks if they haven't already and provided with instructions on how to deal with the volcanic ash health wise

*During past similar eruptions, the locals used the church bells around town to warn the population to evacuate way before there were other methods available

The CNPC agency announced today that the Alert will remain at Phase 3 and will be reevaluated daily. Puebla Airport reopened today.

The office of the Secretary of the Marines flew a drone above the Volcano Crater today while there wasn't the regular explosions taking place. It's been a lot milder today. Below is the video they captured:

*There are no updates tonight, everything remains the same and the ash cloud is still traveling south/southeast bound. The Cruz Roja (Red Cross Mexico) has been on site assisting the residents and handing out masks.

Governor of Puebla reports that for the last 14 hours there have not been any explosions from the volcano. CNPC agency will report any changes to the alert rating. But, for now the alert remains at Phase 3.

UPDATE: From the Governor's Twitter account

"Face-to-face classes in 40 municipalities near the volcano will resume next Monday, May 29, so that one million 57 thousand 867 students from 4 thousand 501 schools and 57 thousand 373 teachers will return to their normal activities, reported the head of
@SEPGobPue
,
@MerloIsabel
in a press conference with the governor
@SergioSalomonC
, highlighting that said decision is due to the decrease in the activity of Popocatépetl, after a serious analysis based on the monitoring results of
@PC_Estatal
, which considers that the current activity of the colossus does not put the school community at risk."

Agency CNPC reported this morning that they'll be requesting another drone/overhead visual of the crater to access any changes in the alert rating. They're hoping to see better images of the lava cone, which was not visible yesterday. They reported that more municipalities will see ash fall. The direction of the wind is south which doesn't affect Mexico City at this time. So, for now it's still at Phase 3 alert.

State of Puebla updated their map of affected areas for volcanic ash dispursement;

"Model #HYSPLIT indicates that ash, in case of emissions from the #Popocatépetl volcano, could be directed to:

•Atlixco Valley and Matamoros
•Mixtec #Morelos #EdoMéx"

So the ash may hit the southern part of State of Mexico again, just south of Mexico City.

UPDATE:

Unless there are significant changes in the direction of the volcanic ash, or the alert rating is reduced or increased, I won't be providing daily updates. I will certainly come back to advise of a rating change, airport closures or if/when it may affect Mexico City. But, for now everything seems to be stable.
