as a former virginian, ill interject....

I like the Courtyard Oceanfront South....it is 1 block away from interstate 264 that goes toward central Va Beach and into Norfolk. The Oceanfront North is a little further down the road.
I have not stayed at the new Residence Inn but I know all of the Marriott properties have balcony/oceanfront views.

If you stay at the South property, ask for any room ending in XX01 particularly, the top 2 floors-they are the Suite rooms!

It depends on when you are going.

I have been taking my family to the CY VB Oceanfront North every year since it opened. My daughter (10yo) loves the outdoor pool. It is one of the best on the strip, with waterfalls and a built in water slide of sorts. It can get pretty crowded during the summer, with guests throwing their things on the chaises early in the morning and not returning until the afternoon. I don't believe the CY South has an outdoor pool. (Both properties have an indoor pool.) All rooms are oceanfront. The beach behind the hotel does not get terribly crowded, even on busy weekends in August. The North location requires a bit of a walk to get to the heart of VA beach, but the trolley stop is right outside. The trolley costs $1 per trip, but you can get a three day pass for the trolley for $5.

The only bad thing about either hotel is, both courtyards each only have two elevators for guests and staff. If you are on the top floors, waits can be very long. If you are on a middle floor, waits can be even longer as the elevators are usually full, when you do get one. Add housekeeping staff with the carts, etc. and waits can get pretty frustrating.

The Courtyard North offers a breakfast buffet for around $12 for adults and $5 for kids. The staff in the restaurant are usually Eastern European, but they understand english pretty well.

Feel free to PM me for more info.

Regards,

RIP...
