Strange - I had a 5 night Standard Award reservation at the Rome Marriott Grand Flora in February of this year and I called to have it changed to make use of the 3-night and one of the 2-night certs included with the European Hopper Award. It was all done over the phone in about 5 minutes 
That sounds correct - but in this case only 1 of the nites has standard avail. The other two are stay anytime.

MR said they did.
Said they called the Flora.
At arrival the hotel said it wasn't combined
At one point they had taken 310,000 points from my account
It my account was fixed after I got back.

I guess the moral of this story is never give up. Today I did my night my night check and all nights have standard availablity. This is for Feb. I quickly rebooked a new reservation and cancelled the stay anytime one - saved 90K points
