Charged for a newspaper?
I am currently staying at a Marriot Suites for 2 nights. I checked my folio on the t.v. to be sure they processed my Bonus Bucks- and they did (wow!) and correctly (last time they added $100 to my bill instead of subtracting and the time b/f they lost it). Looking at my folio I noticed a charge for 1.50 for "newspaper". I woke up this morning and they had three papers at my front door- USA Today, WSJ, and the local paper. I never asked for anything. In my profile it says WSJ but I almost never get it. But why would they give me three papers- how much am I going to read and then charge me without asking me? It's not a big deal and I'm not going to say anything but it just doesn't seem right for them to unilaterally do something for me and charge me for it. Anyone else have this happen to them? What did you do? I am curious what's gonna be tomorrow, seeing as how it's Saturday- wonder if I'll get another three papers.

Newspaper auto charging
The Fairfield in Branson, Mo. auto charges your bill for an unrequested USA Today. When you complain they tell you to read their fine print. If you continue your fuss they make a big production out of removing the charges from your bill.

It happened to me once--can't remember where.
They immediately agreed to take it off the bill.

I think the opt out is a check box on your key card holder.

It isn't just Marriott that randomly charges you for a newspaper. I stayed at the Salt Lake City Sheraton one night and was charged for a newspaper. A sticker on the newspaper stated that I could get a refund if I returned the paper to the front desk. I returned it, but was still charged. It wasn't a large charge so I didn't fight it.

Have they lost their minds???
I actually checked OUT of a TPS in Lombard, Il because they didn;t have FREE papers.....yup, I split over a 75 cent USAToday. The GM said to me.."if you told us, we would have given you one!" I told her..I DID tell YOU AND the gal at the DESK! )OK, so the place was super noisy too-and needed a re-do!) Walked around the corner to the RI which had just been remodeled...they gave me the same rate I had at the TPS (like maybe 5 bucks less than their own-free breakfast AND a paper!)
I wish all FS would at least give free papers to PP/Plat on weekends.....

free newspapers is pretty much a cost of doing business......i have noticed the check box on key packets, but never a sticker saying we are charging you. sheesh.

Its on the fine print of your key card folder, but $1.50 is the highest I have ever seen

I frequently see small print to the effect of "room rate includes daily USA today delivery, if you don't want it, let us know and we'll credit 50 cents to your folio". But I don't ever remember seeing the charge separately itemized on a bill. That could cause hassles with expense reimbursements, depending how observant your company finance department is.

Update
Was coming into the hotel Fri. night and was passing by the front desk and decided to stop and ask. I asked the front desk clerk if the hotel charged for the newspaper delivered to the room and he said no. He said let me check your room bill. He checked and saw that I was charged $1.50 and he said he never saw that before. I said, I really don't need any newspapers in the morning as I read all my news online and I had never asked for any WSJ, so for tomorrow don't deliver any papers to my room. He said ok and that he was going to make a note of it. I got back to my room and saw that he had taken of the $1.50 charge without me asking. The next morning, Saturday, they gave me the local paper- no charge. I am going back to this hotel a few times in a row now so I just went into my acct. and changed my preferences for newspaper to local paper and after I finish my stays I'll change it back to WSJ.

While unlikely, it is possible that someone bought a newspaper from the lobby shop and charged it to your room.
