I've found I'm most likely to get an upgrade if I'm booked for one night as opposed to, say three nights. With that said I have been upgraded on occasion on multiple night stays.

I also think the hotel uses upgrades strategically from time to time. If they are near sold-out status, it might be easier to sell if they put a Plat in the Presidential Suite and leave the standard room in the inventory, rather than try to sell the Presidential Suite at rack rates to someone off the street at the last minute. The plat is happy, the last minute guest is happy, which makes the property doubly happy, (and richer.)

I will get my 75 nights in my next stay in my next stop as I will be staying 4 nights at the next marriott property, totalling 75. Wish me luck to get an upgrade in the next marriott property this weekend. Hopefully, I don't check out again, hehe

I think sometimes you just need to just "check out" from Marriott.
Of course I do not know all of the details, including which hotel, what the occupancy level was at the time (and what it will be when you stay at the next hotel), how many larger rooms or rooms on the Concierge Level there are, how many other elites there are in the hotel, and many other factors. I certainly do not get upgrades anywhere near all of the time! It is a bit of a game, or at least a challenge, to get upgrades as often as possible. It is much less important to me on short stays than it is on long stays. When I am on a business trip and staying somewhere for 7-12 days, and I need a table or large desk, to prepare a presentation, or other conference materials, having a suite is much more important, so I put more effort into getting those upgrades. How much effort you put into getting your upgrades is totally up to you. One last thing, upgrades can also depend on luck, and who you should happen to draw when you check in and are standing in front of at the front desk. Some clerks are more cooperative than others, and some are more knowledgeable than others too.
