I like the JW bangkok, which I prefer over the JW Phuket, but I doubt anyone else would (free internet breaks the tie for me). The surrounings of Phuket are 1000% nicer than bangkok but bangkok have 1000% more things to do. Depends if you want to sit by the pool and relax or go out.
In other words, a luxurious place to stay to explore a fascinating city -- not a beach resort hotel. But when I am in a city, I want to dig into it, not sit by a pool. Ergo, my vote. (I vote for JW BKK over the BKK Marriott Resort and Spa, by the way, for all these reasons.) If I were travelling with kids under 12, I'd choose the Resort, though I thought the service was pretty poor, for BKK. |
Capri...
JW Capri was amazing... but quite frankly... the Island is really the most amazing part...
JW Rio was ehh. There are so many fantastic properties in Rio... it seemed like a waste to us. |
JW Orlando...Is not bad if you need to be in Orlando. No Lounge, nice pool etc
JW Desert Ridge PHX...No lounge..Awesome if you want to go out in Scottsdale JW Tucson..No Lounge..is also nice, but not much to do in tucson and is aways out of town. JW Shanghai is really nice as other people have stated. My top vote if you are going to be in shanghai |
Best JW in the world? Tough question unless you've stayed in all of them! However, I'll tip my hat to my favorites. I agree with those who pointed out that the two Bangkok properties are truly luxurious. The riverside is remarkably peaceful and relaxing while the Sukhumvhit property has a terrific gym, restaurant and lounge (not to mention the yummy café right on the street). They also have one of the best Sunday brunches on this planet (they smoke their own salmon!). As often as I've been to Phuket, I've yet to visit the Marriott there (I can get very inexpensive hotels elsewhere on the island).
There's a Marriott in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) that I particularly like. The Renaissance hotel sits midway between the Petronis twin towers and the KL tower. It has an enormous swimming pool and the best gym I’ve ever seen in a hotel (it includes a tennis court). As a category three hotel, you don’t need a lot of points to stay there a long time. I guess my very favorite would have to be in Jakarta. I’m overwhelmed by the courteousness of the staff in Thailand, but the Indonesian level of service blew me away. I actually felt embarrassed at how they fawned over me. My favorite part was the food. The Bangkok Marriott had been my gold standard for years, so imagine my surprise when I discovered that their head chef had moved to Jakarta! Yummy! |
JW Hong Kong

My vote would be for Palm Desert, CA or Cancun although my JW experiences have been limited to North America.
|
I'd vote for JW Mumbai.

"JW" is not required for greatness!
Three of the most fantastic hotels in the chain are not JW flagged at all, as a matter of fact, one of them is not even a Marriott! I have stayed at all three of them, two of them multiple times, and I recommend all three highly!
Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora is an absolute JEWEL! I think that there are a few reasons that it is not a JW. First, it was not built as a Marriott, it was a grand, GRAND old hotel pre-WW II, and it has not lost one bit of its' lustre, or maybe more accurately, the lustre has been kept up beautifully, and enhanced. Second, it is too small for a JW, since it is only 134 rooms, 21 suites (155 in all). Third, there is no swimming pool. However, this is a super luxury, boutique, FULL service hotel in EVERY sense, and it has a location that is second to none! I stayed in a huge suite with a wonderful view of the Via Venato and a peek of The Borghese, just magnificent! http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel...d-hotel-flora/ Singapore Marriott is another wonderful hotel in a fantastic location, right on Orchard Road, the main street for commerce and shopping in Singapore. The only drawback, if I can think of one is that the rooms are not huge, but they are decent size, and both times that I have stayed there, I was on a high floor with a view of the entire city it seemed. I have stayed in MANY Marriotts and Renaissances, around the US and the world over, and I can say, without much hesitation, that the Concierge Lounge in this hotel is UNPARALLELED! I have to laugh, because as a Plat, I had access to the lounge of course, but in addition, this hotel also gives breakfast coupons to Plats! I was in Singapore for pleasure, escorting my Mother on a dream tour of Asia (She always wanted to go with my Father, but he died prematurely, and she is partially disabled, so it was up to me.) Mom is an earlier riser than I am, so she would get up and go to the lounge for her first (yes, you read that right, her first) breakfast, and then when I woke up, she would go with me for a second breakfast to the main restaurant in the lobby, where they put out a huge and wonderful buffet. It cracked her up that she was eating two breakfasts every morning, but they were both gourmet! The CL is gorgeous, about half the floor, and a view not to be believed, and the evening concierge attendants are incredibly nice, but the spread that they put out there is just unreal! The two nights that we were there on that first visit, we never made it out to dinner, the food selection was huge, several cheeses, five or six hor d'oerves (hot and cold), and three or four main courses, and then at least six selections for dessert! Why this hotel is not a JW, I have no idea! http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...arriott-hotel/ The third hotel is the Renaissance Paris Vendome Hotel, a little gem about 5 blocks from the Louvre, and only about 90 rooms. Most of the rooms are small, but super luxury, with Bulgari bath products, and very high service, and the breakfast is a cross between buffet and table service, just excellent. I have also stayed at this hotel twice, and I love this hotel. It is very luxury boutique style, and because of the size of the hotel and the high service, the staff tends to remember you by name. The decor is high contemporary style, and the bedding is very nice, I cannot say enough about this wonderful small hotel. Oh, yes, if you are not using points or something similar, the cost is about 480 euros per night, not cheap at all, but worth it in comparison to some of the other Paris hotels that I have stayed in! http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...vendome-hotel/ As an additional aside, I recommend the JW Bangkok also, great hotel, nice large rooms, many corners because of the shape of the building, great location, great value because of the exchange rates, overall a terrific hotel, one of the best in the chain. The Camelback Inn is also great, and I love the casita concept, though their internet connection is wireless and spotty in my two recent stays, but a grande dame in Phoenix/Scottsdale, in a great location. I prefer the Renaissance Scottsdale Resort though, not quite as picturesque, but a bit less expensive, many of the casitas have private LARGE whirlpools in the backyards, and the internet connections all work and are free to plats. I am staying in the JW Desert Ridge starting on July 23 for six nights for a conference, I am looking forward to this new property, I hear great things about it, and have already spoken to management ahead of time about upgrading me to a suite because the group that I am with is taking over the whole hotel, so they will have to give the suites to some people complimentary anyway, might as well be ME, since I am plat, right? :D |
Great input, USirritated. It's nice to have a new Marriott poster with a lot of knowledge about properties worldwide.

It's an nice property and the location is excellent, but I would definitely not put it on my best list - even in Singapore. The Hyatt next door is usually the same price and quite a bit better. Sorry for my comments, but others I know have also stayed here and have a similar opinion. In fact, I usually comment, "well, remember, it's not a JW after all!" :) |
6th vote for Shanghai
This is a great hotel. Not sure you can do much better- also in terms of value.

FWIW, I find the lounge there to be so overcrowded as to be almost unusable. The offerings are great, but it needs to be increased in size by at least 50%. Also, I have never once been offered a breakfast coupon at this property as a Plat despite many stays over the past couple years. The other main negative about this property is that it definitely needs more elevators - the waits can be painful at times. Lastly, even as a Plat, the only way I get a concierge floor room is to book it. I have never once received even this simple upgrade there. And this is one property where the concierge rooms are indeed quite an upgrade if you get one of the newly outfitted rooms - much nicer than the standard rooms ^.

I think that it is a very nice hotel, however, I never said, nor did I imply that it was the nicest hotel in Singapore. As a matter of fact, one of the worlds legendary hotels, RAFFLES, is located in Singapore, and it is a hotel that should be visited, even just to walk around the lobby, arcade shops, and grounds by anyone who has a bit of spare time in while in Singapore, it is simply remarkable! |

Interesting, on both occasions when I was there, the lounge was not overcrowded at all, and on both occasions the breakfast coupons were given without asking for them, so I thought that it was just a normal occurrance. Now, granted, this was first in 2002 and second in 2003, so the policy may have changed since then, but I cannot say for sure. Yes, I do recall that the elevators were a bit slow at peak times, but not terribly so for a major hotel, certainly nothing like the JW Marriott Hotel Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, which always has a wait of at least 10 minutes for an elevator, no matter what time of the day it is, and worse during "rush hours" and dinner hour, and it is absolutely no comparison to the Marriott Marquis NYC, which has the most ridiculous elevators on the planet!

My main comment though was really that I wouldn't include as one of the best JW or non-JW properties in the world. Otherwise, it is certainly a perfectly good place. ^ |
