There used to be a Sheraton in Auckland in a great location for going out at night (up the hill), but it was reflagged.

The address was 83 Symonds Street, Box 2771, Auckland, New Zealand.

It is the Langham Auckland Hotel.

Do a search and you can still find a link for the Sheraton Auckland.

Too bad. But I think many hotels in NZ and Australia don't want to pay the high management fees that the big US chains charge. The Sydney Marriott changed to Pullman a few years back.

I faced the same dilemma last month. Ended up at the SkyCity Grand. Very nice hotel and central location. It was around US$750 for two nights.

Is $750 for two nights a common rate for a decent hotel in Auckland? If so, I wonder how far one has to go for a more reasonable fare?

$750 is definitely the high end of the scale... from memory I paid around $170 for a standard room at the same property. It will definitely depend on your dates though.

The Langham is often reasonably priced, but decor can be very a little old.

There was a Holiday Inn Express near the airport. The rates there were substantially lower. Being my 1st time in New Zealand, I didn't want to stay near the airport. Uber driver told me SkyCity Grand & Hilton were the best properties in Auckland. I did have a harbor view which cost more than a standard room.

Just checked my credit card statement. US$765. That included about $30 of laundry. I think it may have been a popular time because many hotels were sold out.

Press Release - Tuesday November 8th, 2016 - 10:57AM - Ritz-Carlton Plans First Hotel in New Zealand: http://www.hotelbusiness.com/Brands/...-Zealand/55575

If these plans become a reality (which is not always the case with future hotel announcements), Marriott International will be represented in Auckland in 2019 with a Ritz-Carlton.

Now, how about a regular Marriott hotel (or other regular full-service Marriott family property) for Auckland? Can't Marriott convince an existing full-service hotel to refurbish and reflag? It seems to me there's an opportunity for a hotel in Auckland to improve occupancy and increase rates with a Marriott affiliation.

Yes, it is.

My company has a per night reimbursement of NZ$450 for Auckland, which is around US$320.

Mentioned in this thread from last November:

When I was in Auckland about 13 years ago (wow - time flies!) I stayed at the Hilton. Would recommend it until we get a Marriott option; great location & views.

Cheers.

Thank you!

I am headed that way at the end of November. Are rooms bookable yet?

Not bookable yet. It probably won't be bookable until the opening date is a certainty. Hotel projects are notorious for falling behind schedule, especially when they involve adaptive reuse of an existing building.

Here's more about the project, including a photo of the building that's being converted:

Yes, I've been bumped by delayed openings but this at least gives me a glimmer of hope so I will need to monitor the SPG group for developments.

Any projected openings in New Zealand ?

Not on the Marriott side, but on the SPG side (which will be the MAR side post-August). Four Points by Sheraton opening June 6, 2018. Ritz Carlton opening in 2019 (probably late or into 2020).

Cheers.
