Are there any promos to get these or do you have to use points to redeem?

I can't seem to find any info on them.

I do not know of any "general" promotions to get room upgrades. I would suspect that specific properties may have special rates that include upgraded rooms (i.e. better views, corner rooms, etc.), but I know of no Marriott wide promotions.

I am definitely not an expert here, but I don't remember Marriott every really having any "general" room upgrade promotions. (Marriott even dropped the Platinum/Gold suite upgrade benefit as most properties seemed to have problems honoring it.) The closest I can remember is way back when there was the Courtyard Club membership, one could earn suite upgrades for Courtyards only. My guess would be that your best bet would be to check the special rates at a local Marriott.

Also note that using points to get upgrades only works a limited number of properties and then only for certain types of upgrades. Also, the Upgrade certificates can only be used for Reward stays, not paid stays.

I haven't seen any promos for room upgrades. Usually, if you're a Gold or Platinum member, you could book a regular room and a receive an room upgrade based on one of these statuses. You would also be entitled to free breakfast on the Concierge Level at most Full Service (FS) hotels or a free healthy-start breakfast in the restaurant.

Offhand, I don't recall ever having seen a certificate or a promotion for upgrades. If you're staying on reward points, there are sometimes options for upgrades based on using additional points or adding cash to your points.

Otherwise, as has been stated here previously, upgrades are given generally in accordance with TOS for the various status levels in the Marriott Rewards program.

I never see any upgrade certificate by MR, however I see upgrade certs by SPG and Hyatt

I don't need any upgrade certificates, as a Platinum I am usually upgraded to a regular room with a lousy view. I do sometimes get a room on the exec floor where the bathroom door won't open all the way because the commode is in the way!
