I've gotten in the habit of looking at each night individually (when I have the time) and booking individual consecutive night's reservations in some cases. At one non-Marriott hotel, the weekend rate was like $70, but if I added a Thursday to it I got $119 for all nights. Kept the weekend res, added a separate Thursday one and saved $98 or so. On checkin, I told them I had two reservations and would to not have to change rooms...they accomodated but checking out / in wouldn't have been a hassle for me.

I am sure supply and demand has a lot to do with this situation. But as the OP has indicated, there seems to be now much more frequency of the rate change happening, at least for me.

In the past, when I have shortened/lengthened stays, I don't recollect an rate change.

I have made many reservations of late, and I had initally plugged in dates for the future just to hold a few days or a week, while I summed up arrival and departures. Now that the dates are up and coming I fine-tuned the arrival and or departure as the needs had changed and it seems that with every reservation, the complete rate for the duration of the stay changed.

Definitive answer

It's an unavoidable problem due to the demand. A lot of hotels have switched to tiered rates. The rates are lowest when the hotel is empty. As long as you are not at an extended-stay property (where the rate is determined by the length of the stay), you should be able to recover your original rate on the nights you already had booked. Keep in mind that you will need to speak with the hotel or Customer Care, as the reservations line cannot force through such things. If reservations has completed the transaction, prior to discovering the rate problem, have them put you in touch with a Customer Care rep immediately. Marriott Customer care is pretty good about getting rates honored when this happens.
