Before making Platinum, I occasionally found a gift in my room - most often when I found a non-smoking room that smelled like someone ignored the sign and I went back to swap rooms. I think they plan out room assignments and place gifts in advance. If something changes (ie. someone complains) then they adjust assignments on the fly, but frequently no one moves the gifts around after the initial placement. While it likely isn't the feel good story you might wish for, I suspect you received the gift intended for someone else.

At the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington VA, I received a fifth of Vodka frozen in a block of Ice . I called the front desk and asked about it, and they put me on hold a while and said it was in appreciation for booking a large group. I said I was an individual traveller on a govt. rate and not part of a group. On hold some more, then told that they must have sent it to the wrong room but to just keep it for my "trouble".

I would concur with the accidental gift theory. When I am on an event planning trip for a property (Marriott or not) there is generally food, wine, candy and water waiting for me. I wish that was the customary PLT gift! I have also received an occassional gift/card written for another person when my room has been changed at the last minute.

The JW Marriott in Shanghai gave me a nice miniature jade tea set as a gift on my last visit. They thanked me for my continued patronage (I'd stayed there once before).
The Grosvenor House in London brought me warm cookies and two bottles of water each weeknight I stayed there. Far beyond the one time welcome gift.
The Courtyard Secaucus "forgot" my PM welcome gift despite my mentioning it twice and substituted $50 at checkout for the missing gift.

One year just before Christmas the Marriott in Denver gave me a fleece vest. Thought it was a very Colorado gift - so many people out there into the outdoor sports and all.

Somewhat on topic:
Stayed at a Fairfield in Florence, SC. Received a supply (3) water bottles and packages of cookies. When asked if I would be needing a wakeup call, I indicated a 4:45am. The agent asked if I would like something for breakfast, for my early departure (Breakfast hours were 7-10). At 5am when I checked out, the breakfast area was prepared. I was impressed.
BTW: I am only Gold

Gifts
Stayed a number of times two years ago at a Fairfield in the area. Had a great rate that I negotiated with the manager. At Christmas time I received a card and a certificate for a free night. It came from the manager who I talked to regularly.
You can imagine my disappointment when the management company sold the location and the motel became a Super 8.
Footnote: New management doubled my rate and lost a 75 + a year client.
