Double-Double

Just got in my e-mail box.

Dear Adam,

Earn Double Marriott Rewards points, starting with your second stay, between July 15, 2004 and September 15, 2004.

As a valued Silver Elite member of Marriott Rewards, we would like to express our appreciation for your continued patronage at Marriott brand hotels by extending this exclusive offer to you. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity and you can earn double points on both your business and leisure stays, points that will add up fast towards your dream vacation.

No need to register for this promotion. To make your reservation today at any of our nine participating brands, visit Marriott.com or call 1-800-MARRIOTT. We look forward to welcoming you again at a Marriott brand hotel soon.
I Guess I'll be moving my 15 upcoming nights from Hilton to Marriot, how can you say no to Double Points?

FlyWithoutWings Jul 8, 2004 8:52 pm

Does anyone know, is this targeted? This Platinum has seen nothing of the sort yet.

AgentVo Jul 8, 2004 8:59 pm

HepperSchepp,

Did you receive this via email or snail mail? That is a great promotion and I too haven't seen this offer yet. I wonder if they are getting back at us Platinums for the last promotion where I got 35,000 bonus points

Terms & Conditions:
Bonus Points will be posted 4-6 weeks after the promotion ends. Registration is not required. This offer is not transferable. Details of this offer are exclusive to the member named on this email. A 'stay' is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity. Members electing to earn miles are not eligible for this promotion. Nights spent while redeeming an award are not eligible towards the promotion.

What I'm wondering is...
I'm staying at a Courtyard one night, checking out 7/15. Then I'm spending 10 days at a Vacation Club. Will the one night at CY count as my first stay?

cawhite Jul 8, 2004 9:27 pm

Silver here & received today via e-mail.

My understanding, from a different targeted promotion with similar terms, is that a "stay" is defined as one or more consecutive nights at the same property, regardless of check-in and check-out activity. So, IMO, the CY stay will count as the first stay and the MVCI stay, if not an owner/exchange stay, should double, even if it begins the same day as the CY checkout. That should net you a cool 40-50K points, plus your elite bonus and MR CC bonus.

Enjoy! :)

Only for Silvers... Hmmmm...........
They already have all you PLT's :D

Sign your wife/dog/MIL up for the MR VISA, which gets them silver status and watch the teasers roll in :)

I have no status at all... :)

GeorgeBurdell Jul 8, 2004 11:59 pm

That's what I'm hoping will happen, the VC stay of 10 nights will double as well as the week I have booked at a Marriott in August.

I have to say that I've done alright by Marriott this year. I got the 15K bonus earlier this year and will actually come within range of making Gold.

All of my stays this year have been personal except for the week in August. Getting MR points is how I get something back for all those weekends on the road with my kids travel baseball team. BTW, they're 54-2-0. Go ECB Astros! :-:

HepperSchepp Jul 9, 2004 6:31 am

I have a stay from september 12-17. How does this work out for the promotion? Full double points? No Double points? Partial Double points?!

DavidDTW Jul 9, 2004 7:44 am

I got the same email yesterday. Since the note specifically mentioned my silver status, I just assumed it is a silver only promo. I wasn't really expecting a promo until they do the Visa/double points thing again this fall. That seems to be an annual event.

Triple7 Jul 9, 2004 8:32 am

My wife (Silver) got the e-mail and I (Platinum) did not. Definitely seems to be a Silver-only promotion.

jnbinpvb Jul 9, 2004 9:02 am

Humbug!

I'm Platinum (52 nites so far 2004), and my wife is Gold (46 nites so far 2004) (legit, not challange's) and neither of us got this...thanks for the loyalty????

foodguy Jul 9, 2004 9:34 am

Nothing for me...so far! But the title of this thread got my heart pounding!! I recall the last double/double was around the end of the year so there may be hope yet. MR needs to get something going soon!!

ohmark Jul 9, 2004 10:57 am

Double/Double--different meaning

Previously when MR used a "double/double" promotion, it applied to everybody and provided double points AND double night credit. It seems like a long time since there's been a promotion with double night credit. Up to a few year's ago there seemed like there was one about every year. I would think the lack of such promotions would cut down on the number of plats and golds.

Denvercccc Jul 9, 2004 3:42 pm

Im a silver and did not get the email!!

I would love double points and double nights. I have a five night stay coming up. I owuld arrange a one nighter if I had to.

Jeeves Jul 9, 2004 10:12 pm

I'm a Silver and I didn't get the e-mail either - yet. It doesn't sound like this is a double/double promo but merely double points after your second stay. I'll take whatever bone they throw at me.

I think the last one was Fall 2001 - Spring 2002. I cleaned up on that one.

Yes that was because of 9/11 to help people requalify. First time I made Gold because not only did they give double night credit, the credits in Q1 2002 counted for both years (2001 and 2002). Now I am hooked and do 50 nites w/o double credits.

mtcrawford Jul 12, 2004 9:51 pm

Why don't the Golds and Platinums of the world unite and flood Marriott's e-mail with requests to be included? I've sent mine in already!

Mike :-:

Hey,

I'm a Plat and my Mega Spring Promo only netted 20,000 points.

What promotion did you receive.

It's improper usage as they are not a silver member. I believe the improper construction is called a dangling participle.

Call the Plat line, if you had the appropriate stays, they should give you the extra 15,000 points. Worked for me, I got an extra 20,000 as I was only targeted to receive 15,000. There is a thread here somewhere about that...

craz Jul 19, 2004 10:28 am

Read this thread yesterday. I figured go the old route- call the MR people. Which I just did, explained that a couple of friends told me they were able to get this double pt credit after their 1st stay bet 7/15&9/15. The guy said hold on looked it up, and told me after it ends 9/15 I will have the 2x posted manually.
I took his name and ext #. I have a week upcoming beginnig of Aug at a Renaisance overseas, so B4 that Ill just do a mattress run, worth it for 10,000+ extra pts. So off to Roomsaver to find a $59 or $69 place in NJ or CT, there are a number of them.
Im a Silver with Marriott. I suggest anyone who didnt get targeted do likewise.

paradocs Jul 19, 2004 12:34 pm

looking for cheap room DFW or SAT

I am silver this year (working to get back to gold). I waited for today's ebreak letter to find a cheap place for a mattress run. SAT seldom is on the list due to the volume of vacationers and conventioners. DFW had no offerings either. So, I am looking for a cheap stay before my upcoming 5 night stay at a Ren. which is followed by some shorter stays.

Well I called and was given the qualified "Sorry this is for Silver only"... :td:

It's like they are begging me to take my business somewhere else!! Guess they need the room so they can fill up their hotels with all those new double pointing Silvers... Writing a letter now...

Any (un)official thoughts or comments, Marriott Concierge?

SEA_Tigger Jul 19, 2004 4:05 pm

I received mine in the mail-box today, so this Silver booked tonight at the SEA Fairfield Inn since I am departing on a six-night stay at the San Diego Marriott and Marina tomorrow and no way am I going to toss 20,000 extra points! *

- I plan to spend ~$2000 so at (now) 20 points per dollar, that's 40K plus the 25% Silver bonus (5000 points) will net me 45K total

777RJ Jul 19, 2004 6:04 pm

I always find it ironic that everytime I have a long assignment where Marriott is the choice of hotels there are never promotions I can sign-up for. Marriott rarely targets its Platinum members for Platinum only promotions. Why make happy the people who make you the most money. But it is all good, because Starwood and Hilton don't target their highest level either.

You're ALREADY happy, right? That's why you're giving them 75+ nights a year. What they're trying to encourage here are those folks (like the ones complaining in the other thread that Marriott should lower the gold threshold) who haven't thrown their complete loyalty behind Marriott to give them just a little more business.

Besides, didn't you get the Mega-Bonus earlier this year? That was adequately targeted at all levels of customer frequency as I recall!

geadnic Jul 19, 2004 6:41 pm

This is my first post, so please be gentle.

I sent the following message to [email protected]

I urge everyone else who is concerned with this promotion to do the same.

To whom it may concern,

I recently learned that Marriott is offering a double-point promotion for Silver elite members only. I would like to formally express my dissatisfaction with this program, and urge you to reconsider this promotion.

I am a business traveler who spends upwards of 150 nights per year in hotels. Over half of these nights are spent at Marriott properties. Being a Gold elite member, I am disappointed to hear that this promotion is targeted at Silver members only. Marriott’s elite levels are already ranked lower than competitors like Starwood, mostly due to the disproportionate number of nights needed to achieve Gold and Platinum level. I am afraid that this new unfair promotion will only aggravate this situation. Most business travelers have a choice of hotel chain in most locations across the world, and the rapidly spreading word of this inequitable promotion will no doubt affect my future hotel selection, as well as the selection of my fellow frequent travelers. I’m sure you realize that gaining the business of a Silver member for a few nights pales in comparison to losing the business of a Gold or Platinum member.

I am sure I am not the first to complain about this offer, but hope my complaint will be taken into account and hopefully impact your choice of promotion in the future.

pitflyer Jul 19, 2004 6:47 pm

Uhm, who decided it's for Silver members only? Is it just because no Gold and Platinum have reported here that they got it? Not everyone posts here, you know...

As a silver member I didn't get the offer either..

I sent mine in. Thanks for the form letter.

Lets see if we get any response.

geadnic Jul 20, 2004 10:09 am

To answer pitflyer's comment, I am attaching the following, received from Marriott in response to my letter. I think this confirms that the promotion is targeted to Silver members only. It does not confirm that ALL Silver members are eligible, but it definitely comfirms that NO Gold or Platinum are eligible.

Dear XXX,

The "Silver Elite Double Points" promotion is a promotion sent out by our Corporate offices. I apologize that our office has been advised that no Platinum or Gold members are eligible for this promotion. Corporate is trying to get our least frequent stayers to make more stays with this promotion.

We will have future promotions that benefit you, our most loyal members.

We appreciate your continued loyalty to Marriott and look forward to serving you again soon.

Sincerely,

Niki Hovanes

Interesting coincidence in that I just received an email from Marriott inviting me (Lifetime Plat) to partipate in an opinion survey on the subject of "Marriott Rewards
Elite Exclusive Offers."

I plan to take it as soon as I get access.

The link to the survey contained in the email sent me to an error message screen. That screen requested that I report the error ("PID" - whatever that means) to the marketing research outfit that's conducting the survey for Marriott.

I know you asked us to be gentle, but you've already blown your credibility. Over half of 150 nights is more than 75 nights, which would make you a Marriott platinum.

You're totally justified in expressing your displeasure, but exaggerating only makes you look like a blowhard whiner. Tell the truth, plainly, and they might pay you more attention!

Marriott should never assume that those 75+ nights/year repeat in perpetuity: they could very well be 0 nights next year. Also, quite a few of posters here easily hit more than double of that in a year. Those extra nights could be spent at a Marriott property if the proper incentives are put in place.

I think the fact that Marriott doesn't seem to target promos at their top-tier (e.g. I don't even receive the EEO) is more a factor of the fact that their competitors don't seem to do this as well (as 777RJ points out) e.g. HH doesn't do anything for me either. But it doesn't have to be this way.
